This game is way easier than I remember. SMB3 got pretty brutal from World 6 onward.

Yeah, even the Special stages weren't bad. I was able to do those when I was 7.

I think the only stage I struggled with as a kid was that second special stage. But even know, I can do it with ease. Also, I'd fly through so many damn stages as a kid lol. That's how I found the Top Secret Area all on my own as a kid lol.

I remember getting stuck on the second Special stage in SMW for the longest time.

But yeah, overall SMW is easier than SMB3.

Pipe land is my least favorite world
I did find it hard as a kid but now I just find most of the levels in that world boring

World 3 is my favorite

Got bored and started watching the history of super mario world

https://youtu.be/s2bTQK6vbKI

It's long and interesting, but basically after smb3 they wanted the next mario game to be more accessible. Apparently it was considered hard at the time.

They wanted noobs to be able to beat it while also having the option of added challenges for more skilled players. That was the purpose behind all the palace switches and hidden levels, so that if you wanted an easier time you can use the blocks for easy shortcuts.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was designed for gamers who were presumably veterans of Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario World was designed for new gamers.

It is.

The differences between the two versions are that the original has different transformations for the kings, the remake has better graphics, and the remake allows you to save and come back -- which lets you do things like stocking up on items. Super Mario Bros. 3 is an awesome game, but one gripe I have with it is how stingy they are with the powerups. If you get a Hammer Bros. suit and get hit in the same level, there are only two other suits in the entire game. (The original, that is. There's a third one in the remake. So I guess that's another difference between them.)

One of these days, I should try and beat SMW without relying on the Top Secret Area between stages...

SMW is my favorite Mario, maybe my first video game, but I really wish its environments had more visual variety, same with the music, as good as it is. I really liked in the Mario Maker games they added more variants like Snow but in the style of SMW.

Seems like it wouldn't be too complicated of a rom hack to make, at least for the visuals. I've just never done one before. Wouldn't actually need to change the levels themselves, just backgrounds and textures etc

good thing we have the romhack scene to breathe extra life into the mario game that had the best aesthetic and feature set

I still use a cloud to skip the world 8 fortress.

I completed it exactly one time.

3 is more of a challenge and might be a better game technically, but I still prefer World. It's almost...relaxing and chill in a way.

Lost Levels feels more like a romhack than an actual official Mario game, honestly. It's just sadistic at times.

Also count me as SMB3>World. It's not that World isn't great, because it is, but it's just that it's mostly really easy(there are a few tough levels towards the end and in the Special Zone, but some of them rely on bad gimmicks like the Boo cloud or utilizing a power-up that hardly appears elsewhere) and the power-ups just aren't tuned very well. SMB3 has a better, overall more satisfying difficulty curve, IMO.

The programmers assumed that, if you were clamoring for more Super Mario Bros., it meant you had completely mastered the first game and wanted to re-experience that growth from amateur to expert. That's why the sequel is 90% trial and error.

I think it's fair to say they guessed incorrectly. But I can see how they would make that mistake. With the possible exception of Pitfall 2, there wasn't yet a precedent for how a sequel to a game like Super Mario Bros. should be made.

I think they definitely got it right with Super Mario Bros. 3.

It was more challenging than the original and expanded upon its mythology in a much more organic way.
