And am on Very Hard.

I left it on Very Hard
After Big Booby Judo Lady only got me to round 3 I tried Muscle Bound Boxer and died
Then I tried Pink Hair Rock Chick and beat the shit outta stage 3 and 4 easily with only one death

Your combo is everything, you never want it to break. If you think you might take damage, abuse I-frames by using certain moves like neutral specials until you can get safe and bank your combo. Getting big combos grants huge scores, and you get extra lives for every 8k points scored during a level. (Works differently for arcade mode, I want to say you only get 1ups every 20k) Also, you might think saving food for when you get damaged is a good idea, but if you have full life you get a large score payout for eating food (250 for small foods and 1000 for full health items), so it might actually be a good decision to pick up food when full, your call to make.
