I tried FF8 for the first time a couple weeks ago. I'm not a fan of the mechanics at all. Also, I don't like to have an "optimized" playthrough, you have to do things like not level up a lot. I also hate in games when enemies level with you.

Is it pronounced Ri-noe-ah. Or Reen-wa? >_>

I'm not even bothering with the game breaking stuff tbh because Triple Triad is annoying and I can't be arsed <_<

I hate that game so hard. It's so fucking bad and people who defend it in any capacity should be shunned from society.

It starts off fantastic and then after the assassination attempt, I'm just like "Er...what's going on?" and I just...can't do it lol

I'd rank it kind of middling, not really the best FF but far from the worst. Way better than 1-3, probably somewhere in the muddy of 5, 10, 13. A few I've never played so can't rank. Triple Triad alone might lift it a bit. Had the impossible task of following up ff7, which is the best ff by a considerable margin.

You definitely want to wrap up all the sidequests you can before Disc 4 because Time Compression suuuuuucks. Get everything done before hand and go straight to Ultimecia's Castle after completing Lunatic Pandora. Once you get to the final area, it's easier to just slap No Encounters on your B team and keep all your good gear / GFs attached to your main team (it really irritated me that both FF 7 and FF 8 pulled half-assed attempts at replicating FF 6's multi-party segments at the 11th hour).

The only exception is that you can skip the entire Card Queen sidequest and just challenge her directly for her rare cards if you find her in Disc 4.

You ever read the theory that everything after Disc 1 is a fantasy concocted by Squall's mind moments before he dies from getting stabbed by the icicle? I don't buy that it was the original intent, but there's enough little details to make it at least semi-plausible.

And this is a Square RPG so I know for sure that some super secret bonus item was hidden there that I screwed myself out of because I messed up the code sequence like 30 times

And the tone is...weird? I don't hate it. It sort of feels like I'm playing a parody of a Final Fantasy game. Why is everyone, heroes and villains, so fucking goofy? Am I supposed to take anyone seriously? >_>

I'ma call it a night with this. This game is getting hard carried by its soundtrack, it's about the only enjoyable part of this game besides Quistis and Selphie

Every FF is goofy.

Only good thing about FF8 is the soundtrack and Triple Triad. Everything else ranges from mid to sewer ass.

Wont lie not heard of Quinoa before.

I'll be perfectly honest in that I was a pretty emo kid in the late 90's, and I very much related to ol' grumpy emo Squall; his arc carried me through most of the story. Plus the graphics and FMVs were still pretty cutting-edge at the time, and of course the soundtrack was appropriately top-notch for FF games of that era.

Without the benefit of nostalgia, I imagine it'd be pretty hard nowadays to see enough value in the game to play it through from start to finish.

i never finished this game. i learned that you can cheese the stats in the game with card mod and shit and i blew through the game.

then i looked at what you need to do in the final dungeon and said fuck this.
