I didn't like that they turned Wanda into a horror movie villain. One because she was one of my favorite characters. Two because I'm don't enjoy horror movies.

It's alright. Raimi really saved a pretty uninteresting script with a lot of frankly fuckin awesome sequences/visual components that felt really creative. I'm surprised at how polarizing it is

I feel like as a Doctor Strange movie, it's worse than the 1st one. Honestly, even as a *story* it's probably worse than the 1st one -- the script is kinda disjointed at times and feels like rewrites and reshoots took their toll.

But Raimi doing Raimi stuff and having so many bloody and horror-y moments was cool. I feel like it's going to end up being a comfort movie for me, but not one I can actually say was super great. It was just a fun "turn off your brain and have a good time" movie, which isn't a bad thing.

Another thing Ive heard people mention is how the trailers may have hurt the movie a bit because people went in expecting it to be a slightly different type of movie. In that (mild spoilers) they thought there would be different universes all over the place and a hundred different cameos.

This is about how I feel. What I loved about the first movie was the creativity in the visual spectacle, as well as Strange's personal struggles to redefine himself after his accident and grow as a person. This movie really delivered on the visual spectacle, and sold the stakes really well, but the plot and character development was probably weaker than the first. Part of that, I think, is that this movie was a vehicle for multiverse lore to help set up phase 4.

I really enjoyed it, though.

It definitely used the cameos pretty well. They picked a decent slate of characters to roll out that they'll probably use in the future combined with a cute little nod to X-Men. Since it's a multiverse movie they did the reasonable thing and used them as sacrificial lambs to make Wanda more of a presence, which I think worked with Raimi's directing.

Honestly you just described a Raimi film. Like, EVERYTHING you said was also true about his Spider-Man films. They had great cinematography and were beautiful (for their time) CGI spectacles, but with few exceptions the writing, dialogue, characterization and character development were all a fucking joke.

btw there's a slew of channels calling the movie SJW propaganda because America has 2 moms and Christine married a black guy. No joke, the usual suspects are having a meltdown over it LMFAO

most of the negative reception I've seen is not related to this (though some are critical of the memory scene since it's easily removed/edited for international markets, making it a riskless move for Disney) but it's worth noting how bottom of the barrel some criticisms of this movie are lol

I think those elements were actually totally fine in the Spider Man movies specifically because it's emulating older era corny comics. It all fits pretty well with what they're doing: Pretty clear-but-thin characters, corny dialogue and ideas, and style that absolutely has fun with how silly the concept of Spider Man can be.

I also don't think they resulted in a bad movie here. I probably preferred the first one overall, but i had a blast watching this one. However, had I not watched WandaVision (and maybe even Loki), I doubt I would have enjoyed this movie as much as I did.

All those things were good where it counted, with Peter and the main characters.

Having rewatched the trilogy before NWH came out, I was surprised at strong the writing was for each of them. Then when you add in J Jonah, Aunt May, and the side cast, you have a really well-fleshed out cast. They felt like real people in a campy comic book setting, instead of caricatures or one dimensional cliches.

Compared to this movie, where no one really seemed to put much effort into the characters at all. I don't really know shit about America by the end, all Strange learned is that he wasn't happy, and Wanda only worked as well as she did because of how strong the writing in WandaVision was. (Of course, Raimi isn't the writer here, so that's not a knock at him per se, but still.)

It's still a fun movie, and I enjoyed it, but it felt like Raimi just wanted to make cool spooky visuals and nothing else.

oh great casting for sure, and I enjoyed all of it at the time, but I also did a rewatch before NWH and found Parker to be consistently the cringiest interpretation of the character.

I was spoiled watching Everything Everywhere All At Once, a movie that utilizes the multiverse in not only a creative way but a way to tell a great story about generational trauma and nihilism, and I just felt this movie didn't use the multiverse all that creatively or well at all. The Sam Raimi stuff was great, but it was otherwise a very disjointed movie, though most of that is on the script. The characters kind of felt all over the place, I really didn't like the fact that Wanda, a great character, was kind of regurgitated as a villain. Like I get the darkhold is what made her "evil", but it just felt like she didn't learn a damn thing from the events of the WandaVision show. There's more potential she was capable of, but it felt wasted. In fact, speaking of wasted potential, America Chavez was just a walking plot device, barely felt like a character.

With that said, I think most of the disappointment of the movie was from the trailers, such as the cameos not being anything interesting other than expositions... and dying (granted the way they died was great). With that said, even though I think this was an average movie, I do like the fact that at least this movie did try new things. MCU films are usually always safe that I'm just glad when they experiment, especially going to other genre's. Winter Soldier being a spy/thriller genre was great and this movie being a "horror" film was also a welcome edition as well. Eternals having the indie feel to it also gets nods from me as well.

Oh yeah, no doubt. I don't care for his Peter beyond nostalgia.

That said, the writing for him was always consistent and he had pretty strong narrative arcs, especially in SM2.
