Trump wasn't banned for exercising free speech. He was banned for a coordinated, democracy-destabilizing misinformation campaign so effective it literally spawned a cult and an attempted insurrection.

Musk thinks he's saving discourse by bringing Trump back. He's doing the literal exact opposite. Giving a megaphone to a wannabe dictator just gives him the opportunity to drown out legitimate democratic discourse.

This. I think its more about trying to get some of the user base back. He wants Twitter to be the platform for people to argue (talk) with each other. Allowing Trump back would probably bring the most followers back because Trumpers are generally cult like followers that cant think for themselves. If trump comes back they come back.

...has twitter ever made money?

The only way this would work is charging for the blue checkmark, and pricey corporate accounts.
Paid social media sites have never survived for very long, usually less than a month.

People don't talk on Twitter. Especially not Trumpsters.

The problem with Musk's view of free speech is, like Conservatives, they have no idea what free speech is about or its intention.

I don't think he cares one way or another.

I honestly think he just wants to make people mad.

I think those people never actually left. All of the alternatives have flopped.

Musk is hoping those people will pay $3 a month to maintain a 'free speech platform' by telling them what they want to hear.

Thats not even relevant to conversation.

People get hung up on the semantics, and sometimes they matter. But not always. This is a simple censorship issue. If you think people are only allowed to say what you approve of them saying, then youre pro censorship. This is fine if its in your house, a job site or a private school, for example, but Musk doesnt think it applies to Twitter, which he now practically owns. He can allow or not allow whatever the fuck he wants, whether we cry about it or not. Remember when people laughed at critics and said if you dont like it (censorship) then go make your own social media platform? I remember and clearly Musk does too. He went and bought one.

Never said it was. I'm saying it's up to the users to discern fact from fiction, just as it always has been throughout history. Misinformation isn't anything new, as a matter of fact it's a tale old as time.

Disinformation pretty obviously falls under free speech. Inciting a violent attack on the US capitol doesnt.
