Christ dude, it's an incident that happened 17 years ago, it's not that weird that people who aren't into sports might not have known about/remembered it - they don't have to be some negative stereotype to be in that camp. Anyways In all scenarios, the more appropriate reaction from the player should be to let security handle it (though I'm not going to really chastise someone for getting involved if they see their family being attacked). Shitty fans like scenario 1 are typically dealt with well enough by security (kicking them out) and the team/arena (banning them), with surrounding fans confirming when someone has crossed the line into fucked up territory like that. Actual fights or things being thrown on the court, those will get dealt with quickly. That being said, with incidents with shitty fans seemingly becoming more and more common, I'm not entirely opposed to an example being made out of one, lol.
