I'm completely against them getting any form of payment for playing or selling merchandise.

I just don't see why they should have that right.

Compare them to let's say a student researcher volunteering in a lab that brings in hundreds of thousands if not millions in research grants.

They should absolutely get paid, but they also shouldn't get preferential treatment in admissions, first pick of classes, "help" maintaining the minimum GPA to be allowed to play, and free tuition in exchange.

I think it's weird that college sports is broadcasted and hyped at a nation wide level. After they graduate they either move onto a career or move into the pro level which if the later is when they should become famous and get paid. Since it's on a nationwide level then they definitely should be paid for at least merch sales of their likeness in clothing and video game sales.

They already get a pretty lucrative life while playing, but they are robbed at the same time. I personally don't think it should be broadcasted, but Merican's gotta have their sports.

Because the schools are pocketing tons off money off of themyes its a choice but when you consider the risk of injury and the ludicrous cash these colleges make off their sports teams it just doesnt seem right.

They have idiotic rules. I remember one player had like no money and wasnt even allowed to have somebody else treat him to dinnerits dumb as shit.

The thing is that when researchers get grants, the university pilfers like 50% of it. So researchers quite literally make the university a bunch of money.

I don't think the players should be paid to play, but I also don't think that the schools should be making the huge amounts of money that they make on them either.

College sports should not be nationally televised super events in massive stadiums with huge marketing campaigns and billion dollar corporate sponsorships behind them and it continues to baffle me that that's what they are in the US.

It's definitely frustrating when you're being told that $200k/yr will roughly pay for like 2 grad students and some light professor oversight and you know those students aren't getting paid shit.

I'm not a big fan of people making money off the success of others while they get a pittance.

If you're an NCAA athlete, you'd be better off having an academic scholarship or financial aid.

Whether you're the next Michael Jordan or someone that just wants to play a few more years of competitive volleyball, you have to deal with the NCAA's bullshit.

People against this generally think of the few percent of student-athletes that will have a professional sports career and not all the other ones who won't.

Wasn't it UConn or something where the basketball team couldn't even afford food every day because of bullshit NCAA rules?

They also don't want to pay kids, and then prevent them from making money in any way. Someone on an academic scholarship could become a millionaire YouTuber on the side, but a college golfer can't accept a free dinner or wash their car with university water because "tHeY'rE aMaTeUrS"

The only reason I'm not on board with it is because you know the colleges will then raise tuition significantly higher on everyone else to now make up for the money they are losing by having to pay the athletes.

College athletes are prohibited from the following things:
Accepting gifts, including food.
Working an outside job.
Selling their image.
Profiting off playing.

A poor student who manages to make the team can easily be stuck in a situation where their only meals are the ones provided by the team under NAACP rules. They can go a couple days without eating, and they are not even allowed to apply for food stamps or they lose their spot on the team...

He's trying to cut off one of the very few lanes that black people dominate in. People who have been notoriously left behind by their own country and are at a way higher chance of already needing to forgo their dreams to stay home and provide for their family. Rather it's his intention or not. Probably isn't, probably is just ignorant. But none the less, those are the people he's saying "Fuck you, Imma support laws that make it that much harder for you to be able to follow your dreams without potentially putting your families at an even bigger disadvantage" to. Good to see this ignorance thriving in our people.

"Just shut the hell up and make white people more money"

....hmmm. seems very familiar

Something tells me you have no idea how the NIL deals work and how it generally has nothing to do with university money and everything to do with boosters and outside money going to student athletes.

Which had been happening for decades in basketball and football but it's just legal according to NCAA bylaws now.

But like, other people are making money off someone while they can't take any of it for themselves. If anything, the vast majority who don't have a bright future in sports after college are the ones that most deserve payment for their labor. That includes most of the players in major televised sports that rake in the dough. If money is to be made, it should go to all involved. Or there shouldn't be money. Why do television networks and board members/coaching staff deserve all the money? Are there not human beings actually on the field actually doing the athletics that generate the revenue?

You're essentially arguing that employees should only get paid anything at all if their employers choose to do so.

You're also ignoring that college athletes aren't even allowed the freedom of any other students, including others with scholarships. They can't get jobs. They can't make any money outside the school. They can't accept anything free
