just wondering

I finished Liurnia, and have explored some of each, but I'm wondering which one I should focus on for now.

They're around the same in terms of difficulty, but to get to Atlus the "proper" way, Caelid comes first. You get part of the medallion there.

Caelid, but keep in mind that some of Atlus is easier than Caelid

I actually reached Atlus the not so proper way. I basically jumped between Caelid and Atlus anyway

I think Caelid is technically a higher level area

the random enemies strewn throughout the landscape are a bitch to fight

I did too, but the NPCs keep telling you to take the Dectus lift to Atlus, and half of the lift medallion is in Caelid.

I think I got to it by beating the boss you encounter after the tunnels that have the singing bats.

actually, I was first abducted by those torture device things at the bottom of the academy, beat the duo torture device bosses, and got to Mt. Gelmir, I think, and after some exploration, it led me to AP.

Well, based off the Elden Ring boards and even this very thread, I think it is a pretty common misread. I admit I even thought it was originally Atlus.

I had the complete opposite experience. NPCs kept hinting that I should go through the mines or w/e that was. Didn't even know what the Dectus lift was til I was endgame exploring.

Also, Fort Faroth (where the 2nd half of the medallion is), is honestly pretty brutal for early game. The trio of bat ladies is fuckin rough

I did Caelid next. I didn't know you needed the medallion or whatever to actually use the lift. So I ended up going over the mountains and through a different area before actually figuring out how to get into Altus. >_>

you were correct, I was just messing around.

anyway, some places in AP make me feel like I'm strong enough, and others are making me feel like I'm gonna have some trouble.

I'd do Caelid first. Southern 2/3rds of the map are pretty level appropriate for post-Liurnia, and Radahn/Redmane is way easier than Leyndell and its bosses. The northern part of Caelid is later game progression (as evidenced by the comparatively large amount of runes enemies drop and the high tier of smithing stones available).

I'd probably start making my way east along the road in Caelid, clearing points of interest as you find them. Hit up the swamps, then do Sellia and the NPC quests there. Then start Ranni's line in Caria Manor up to the point where they mention that Radahn is holding the stars in place, then do Redmane and Radahn.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Upper Caelid should be avoided for awhile. But you can easily go down to the castle in Caelid before Atlus. And that would be the "proper order", but the game also gives hints about sneaking into Atlus early. So I dunno, either way works.
