I remember enjoying them in my teens and early 20s, but now thing they are boring and stale. Mainline games are the same shit on repeat

The mechanics became more interesting and complex, but the pacing of the games slowed significantly. Whether this is a worthwhile tradeoff is up to you but in a lot of ways the games are similar to how they always were so it's probably just your tastes changing

I've played BDSP and I put it down around patch 1.3 because I just grew bored of it.

I've recently played Crystal again, and had more fun with that.

Bit of both. The stories rarely ever were good outside of the spin offs (explorers of dark and whatnot are amazing) but the gameplay has hardly changed in any meaningful way. Even when they introduced new mechanics early on, oh wow double battles in RS and there were like 4 all game. Only 2 being mandatory. Then Emerald added in more but only optionally. :/

Sword/Shield and BDSP sucked but Sun/Moon and Legends Arceus were both great, so I don't think there's much of a pattern to point to.

They got worse when they switched to 3D

I'm at a really weird point when it comes to Pokemon as well. I've been playing the video games for over two decades now and I'm honestly getting fatigued by it. They definitely haven't been the best since they went 3D and they're releasing more games than ever more frequently.

Even Legends Arceus that's trying to do a lot of new things for Pokemon gameplay and a little story-wise just feels boring and one long grindfest that I don't even look forward to playing it (I say that even as I've put 120+ hours into it in 2.5 months). For example, it was more fun gathering resources and getting lost satchels for the good first 30 hours and then I actually liked battling/catching things (which I hated until I beat the game) and now none of it is fun for me.

I think it's a combo of me getting older for sure but also I'm just not liking them as I did 15 years ago.
