I started using Newpipe on Android, no shorts or anything else like polls or text posts, just videos.

If you just mean short videos, there are a ton of those already that aren't officially Youtube Shorts

The biggest complaint I have is the number of unskippable ads I've been seeing lately. Or ads that are 10+ minutes long where I basically have to skip them, which is a minor pain in the ass because I like to settle in and enjoy what I'm watching.

But "youtube shorts" have always been a thing. This guy has been making videos since 2008 and they are all a few seconds long

It's an entirely different format and feed, though, which is a direct rip of the Tiktok style.

Monetized channels have flipped the script and are now portrayed as the victims, metagaming the system and being as obnoxious as possible are now congratulated and treated like some matter of fact thing everyone does.
Recommendations box you in aggressively, are factored into an increasingly useless search feature, the algorithm decides whatever's metagaming the system best is probably what you're after. That plus an uninspired heap of short forced-meme videos that the algorithm is lifting regardless of their relevance to you and an extra helping of videos you've already watched.
We are a long way away from 'broadcast yourself' at this point.

Yea they directly ripped it off from tiktok, even got the same formatting and swipe up for next video gestures

It's not youtube's fault that short videos are popular, the Youtube Shorts format does suck but it's very easy to get around.

The tv app had both things as irrelevant before it even happened. You couldn't see dislike numbers and shorts don't pop up.

Well in your case you should look at the main page and not just your subscriptions tbh. I had a hard time finding a Shorts video when I was looking for one as an example until I remembered that Jackson Mahomes video which was a Youtube Short

Well sorry. Like I said the reason they are making those Shorts is they are a popular content format. Your beef is really with the content creators and not with youtube
