I feel like I'm actually living a life in Skyrim, whereas in Elden Ring, I feel like the only drive is the gameplay. I hardly feel like I can roleplay at all.

But that's literally the only thing Skyrim does better.

Freedom, exploration and experimentation

Elden Ring you can't get away with trying anything cool or the world will beat the piss out of you. Skyrim has more possibilities

In addition to a follower who can fight well and carry some stuff, I also have a goblin following me who summons an atronach and a goat that doesn't fight but can carry a bunch and makes goat noises.

Difficulty isn't annoying. (I can build character to survive without having to dodge/block, which I like)

stuff others already said like roleplaying and non-combat stuff to do.

IDK I feel like roleplaying in Skyrim is shit and is only improved with mods.

being locked into being the Dragonborn was whack. Especially if I was a non-nord class. Skyrim felt like Fallout 3 where you're "roleplaying" but youre the role the game makes you be.

in Elden Ring you're just tarnished and everything about your character is up to you.

I love both games but i cant think of anything skyrim does outright better than Elden Ring other than mod support. Which isnt too crazy since they are games like a decade apart.

Skyrim is really good at making you spend 50 hours looking for mods and then starting up the game and then you realize it's still Skyrim and you uninstall.

do you have to be the dragonborn? can't you just not do that questline and do whatever tf you want? pretty sure like the first 3 times i played skyrim i put in like 60 hours before i got burnt out and never did the main quest beyond unlocking shouts

There's a specific quest at the beginning of the game that if you don't do it, dragons never start spawning in the world. But you're still Dragonborn and that's how everyone in the game addresses you

You can still get shouts etc, even with ignoring the main quest so you are always technically still "Dragon Born" even if you just RP as an adventurer/farmer/whatever. Mods can fully disable it at least, or just give you alternative start so you never start Helgan etc.

But yeah, it's still easily ignored even without mods.

Freedom, exloration, characters/dialogue, vareity, story/lore, crafting.

There's a reason why it still sells every time they release it

Also there's a difference in perspective when it comes to RPGs

Some people like your sword skills to go up by using your sword.

The souls series has always hated that and isntead skills go up attaching rocks to your weapons

Tha puts a lot of people off. It's very hard to "Role Play" in a Souls Role Play Game unless your Role is a mute weirdo who is obessed with rolling and fighting blobs, armored dudes and armored blobs.

its not though. Skyrim is loosely an RPG. You're THE dragonborn. A nord hero. You can't be an evil dragon born, or a coward dragonborn. The same with fallout 4.

Its been a problem with beth's games since oblivion. Morrowind was the last true RPG they made.

Quests are more interesting, the upgrade system I think is more cool, I like the smithing and enchanting more than in Elden Ring, I like the NPCs in Skyrim more, the story is better, the world feels more alive

Elden Ring has better combat and visuals but I'd give everything else to Skyrim. Just the type of game I like playing more

Im actually kind of impressed with how engaged I am with Elden Ring given how 1 dimensional it is gameplay wise.

Whats that over there? Something that wants to kill me and I need to kill first.

Whats in this town? Something that wants to kill me and I need to kill first.

Whats this item? A way to kill things.

What about this item? A different way to kill things.

Compare to similar games like Skyrim or Zelda where theres puzzle solving, physically interacting with the world, more robust NPCs, and more variation in locale-based gameplay/tone, etc.

You're not wrong tbh but I still think Skyrim has that "do your own thing" feel, even if it's watered down from earlier games.

I agree and i really love skyrim. I put thousands of hours into it. I think the issue here is "what does Skyrim do BETTER than Elden Ring" which is nothing other than mod support or being a fantasy life simulator. Which is kinda unfair to skyrim because its a 10 year old game.

NPC's have the ability to walk around instead of teleporting to different places when you fast travel or move away far enough after you've hit a predetermined trigger.

They're very different types of RPG's though. Elden Ring is basically solely focused on combat and is built on what is basically a dead and hostile world. Skyrim's world is very much inhabitable and many people live there with their own lives and motivations that aren't just...whatever the hell the people in Elden Ring want.

Can I become a professional miner in Elden Ring?

Because for my most recent playthrough of Skyrim I completely ignored the main questline, and went looking for ore, duel-wielding picks so I could mine it faster. Then Id smelt everything down at my forge on my homestead in Falkreath and take it to various blacksmiths around Skyrim to trade. It was a simple living, but an honest one.

Stealth is better in Skyrim (even if it is overpowered). That includes bow and arrow combat thinking about it due to the first person perspective.

Skyrim is more dynamic and systems driven. There's nothing like plopping a bucket on a head so you can easily steal items.

Side quests are tricky. The optional areas in Elden Ring are overall way better but the actual structure of side quests and guilds are better in Skyrim

Skyrim also has better music.

I think overall an Elder Scrolls game with Elden Ring style combat would basically be the perfect RPG for me tbh
