i always thought the final boss from sonic 2 was a bit much, especially since there's a mini boss at the start. might be an easy mini boss, but as a kid i didn't know an easy way to beat it lol.

I forget, didn't the Sonic 1 Final Boss pull the same gimmick? Meaning, no rings.

Its for this reason I never actually beat Sonic 2 until I was a teenager and bought a nomad.

Yeah, but that final boss is quite a bit easier and frankly, kind of lame.

True that. The prior boss chase vertically up through that odd bit of Labyrinth Zone was more of a hassle than the true Final Boss was, in my opinion. Man, that shit was annoying.

Thinking about it, none of the classic Sonic games have good final bosses.

I would personally have to disagree; I quite enjoyed the final bosses for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Knuckles got to hand Mecha Sonic his blue metal ass, while Sonic himself went head to head with the Doc, going through the gauntlet of his giant robot suits & chasing him down through Doomsday Zone in the stratosphere while in Super/Hyper Form; you can say what you will, but to me that was epic as hell back in the day.
And the music, as ever, puts it over the top for me.

Big Arms in Sonic 3 is a pretty neat fight too, but then, I only did that all of once. But 3K definitely nails it. Very interesting, kinetic fights too.

sonic 1: no rings on the final boss

sonic 2: no rings on the final boss

sonic 3 & knuckles: you keep your rings from the previous stage, but if you die on the final boss, you wont have rings again

Agreed; Sonic Team was on fire back in 1994, for sure.

As a kid when I fought Metal Sonic before this the ONLY way I would allow myself to beat him was doing a spin dash through metal's dash. That was the only acceptable way to deal the last blow.

80's - 90's Sega was amazing.

So much of what is taken for granted now came from them.

if you're having a hard time you can take it slow with him, he has stuff he does that leaves him super vulnerable

its made a really good boss because if you're more skillful you can hit him pretty easily by being more aggressive and knowing when to jump too

Imagine perfecting the zones all the way through Wing fortress, collecting multiple continues and lives, then Silver Sonic just eats them like cereal. What a way to ruin a kids afternoon

On the other hand I beat Sonic 2 the other day, and I fought the final boss aggressively for the first time. It was exhilarating! Beat him in like a cycle in a half, when usually it takes me 3

It took me a decade to pull it off, 15 years if you're a stickler for completing the game in one go.

The lack of rings isn't the problem. The problem is that a lot of the time, you don't bounce off him and end up going into him and dying.

Yeah the collision detection needed more work.

If you absolutely don't want to lose,

Run away, when he flies into the to sky wait, move all the way to the right, wait til he's about to come down, move to the left, hit him because he dips, then moves all the way to the left, because he's going to fire his arms. Rinse and repeat.

as long as you play super defensive egg robo can't really do anything if you just run to the other side of the screen. playing patient is tedious but it makes the fight really easy

Yeah, the zero rings in Sonic 1 was more fair because of how simple the final boss was. Once you got a feel for the energy ball hitboxes it was ez pz

Sonic 2 puts you up against 2 bosses back to back, both of which have un-telegraphed surprise attacks that absolutely will kill a beginner and burn through lives.

Once you realize you can cheez Silver Sonic it gets a bit easier, but Death Egg Robo is just annoying. Especially since they bumped the HP up to 12 from the regular 8. They really should have given you at least 3 rings to work with.

It's a good strategy but it's not full proof I've fallen into the spiked gauntlet doing that.
