Sword and Shield.

This.
Please don't buy Arceus. The worst thing they could do to the Pokmon series would be turning it into a shitty low-budget third person shooter.

Switch was my first ever introduction to Pokemon games, I played Sword, Diamond and Arceus. I played the most of and preferred Sword of the three.

I'm enjoying Arceus Legends. It's the Pokemon game I was waiting for a long time. It may feel more like a concept game, but there's a lot of mechanics they can put on a mainline game like stealth catching and an open like world.

Sword and Shield.

Yeah, probably this, especially if you can get Sword or Shield for around $30. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has more Pokemon than base game Sword and Shield without DLC Pokemon(around 90 more), but you can trade for Sword and Shield's DLC Pokemon without buying and owning the DLC, and in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl there are less Pokemon moves, less Pokemon abilities, less held items, and it has worse online for the most part.

Legends Arceus is worse than Sword and Shield and somehow even worse in than Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl in some ways due to much less Pokemon(Only around 240), dumbed down battles due to MUCH less Pokemon moves(Only 180 compared to Sword and Shield's 660+ with DLC Pokemon included), no multitarget Pokemon moves despite having up to 1 v 4 battles, no held items, no local or online PvP trainer battles(A series staple since Red and Green / Blue, gone), one town and no traditional Pokemon gameplay experience. Legends Arceus has the best Pokemon catching system considering it has real time catching and stealth but that's all it has over the other Switch Pokemon games.

Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee isn't worth playing these days because almost all of the Pokemon in it are obtainable in the other Switch Pokemon games and they all have a considerable amount more on top of that among many other things that this game falls short at compared to those. It really only had value as the only traditional Pokemon game on the Switch until Sword and Shield came out.

I'd rank them as follows....

Sword / Shield+Expansion Pass(Easily the best Pokemon experience on Switch so far)

Sword / Shield

Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl(VERY SLIGHT edge over Legends Arceus due to having more moves, and especially local / online pvp trainer battles)

Legends Arceus

Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee(Outdated and not worth playing these days)

Flock has a point. I didn't hate Legends Arceus but it was incredibly underwhelming outside of how you can catch Pokemon, almost everything else is done better in the other Switch Pokemon games.

Depends. Do you want the worst version of a game you've already played at least three times, or the first attempt at innovation since first gen?

What a bro. I have yet to play Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl and would like to try and play either to get their mons to help make a living national dex, so if your offer stands, I'd take you up on it. If not that's fine too.

If you're looking for essentially the same experience pokemon has always been with new pokeymans, go SwSh.

If you're looking for a new experience with a smaller dex, move pool, etc, go Legends Arceus.

If you're looking for a bad time, play New Pokemon Snap.

This is the real answer. Best Pokemon game in years.

SwSh is just okay, and even bad in some spots. If you've never played Diamond our Pearl before, get Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl instead.

Kind of depends.

Legends Arceus is the best Pokemon game on the Switch. It's interesting reading people talk bad about this game. It seems the whole National dex fiasco broke them and now it's all about quantification of value. This game has less Pokemon, therefore it is worse. It has less moves, so it is worse. Legends Arceus is a focused attempt at evolving the formula. Open maps filled with all kinds of cool Pokemon. Even with less Pokemon, there is so much to find in each zone. I constantly swapped out Pokemon. The game also encouraged it by making the game revolve more around clearing the Pokedex. I have played every Pokemon game and have never cleared the Pokedex. I caught everything in Legends Arceus and loved it. Cool setting. Fast gameplay. Changed mechanics that make some battles actually difficult from a single player perspective. It's an incredible game.

Sword/Shield is fine. It's very by the numbers for Pokemon. It has an incredible amount of variety in it's regional dex. I actually had trouble forming a team because there was so much good stuff immediately available. The new game changer is the Wild Area. A big open area where you can spend hours just hunting down new Pokemon. It's a lot of fun. Then the is Dynamax which makes the Pokemon big. Not a compelling feature, but has makes a difference in competitive. Speaking of which, this is the only game where the official format is played. So, if you are trying to play VGC, you have to play this game. The story is particularly bad, with your character being a non-factor and everything being handled mostly off screen by NPCs. Which you think we be cool, because it means you can just focus on being a trainer, but no. It will still stop you every five seconds like a child to tell your where to go, what to do, and how to do it. So, it just wastes your time with different dialogue. Overall, unless you care about competitive I would pass here. Since you are getting S/V at the end of the year, you might as well just wait for that game if you want a standard Pokemon experience.

BDSP is fine. It has the disadvantage of being a remake of one of the worst Pokemon games. Not much has changed. Route variety is awful. EXP ALL is always on. However, they didn't scale the mid game for it at all. You will be around 20 levels higher than everything until you hit the last gym. The last couple major battles (last gym, E4) are some of the most compelling single player battles in the history of Pokemon. So, there is that.

LGE/LGP are fun enough. Mostly here for nostalgia. Simplified mechanics. No wild battles. Just catching things in the wild. Not as terrible of a change as it may seem. Worth playing for sure.

My recommendation is Legends Arceus and nothing else is really close. Pokemon Snap after that.

I wouldn't recommend anyone play any of the old Pokmon games without cheating your face off. SwSh are the only games I would say are playable without making massive changes.
