https://www.nj.com/news/2022/03/nj-town-paid-400k-to-conceal-alleged-racist-slurs-by-mayor-police-chief.html
Two years ago, a whistleblower in Clark Township came forward with explosive allegations: Hed secretly recorded the mayor, the police chief, and a supervisor in internal affairs referring to Blacks with racial slurs.

Yet Clark officials hid those accusations by preemptively agreeing to pay $400,000 to the whistleblower and his attorney to avoid a lawsuit that would have thrust them into the public eye, an NJ Advance Media investigation has found. Under the settlement, the whistleblower, police Lt. Antonio Manata, turned the recordings over to the township. And Clark allowed him to remain on the payroll without working until he retired at the rank of captain last month with his full pension.

Rest of the article is paywalled, but I think you get the idea.

I mean... I'm glad the info got out but I'm having a hard time calling this guy a whistleblower. He took a huge cash payout, got to get paid and promoted without working until retiring with a full pension, and turned over all evidence as part of the settlement.

This. He literally just blackmailed them. Calling him a whistleblower is just plain dishonest

Cop pensions are usually based on the last few years salary, and cops get overtime pay. So if they know they want to retire they work a ton for a few years to bump the pension up. Its a real drain on cities.
