Starting this season every team must have a minority assistant coach on offense. Some teams already meet this requirement. The goal is for them to have "meaningful and substantial interaction" with the main coaching staff.

Good.

The argument was always "just hire the most qualified person", but when minority candidates were never getting the job, they in turn would never get the experience, and would never get the chance to become the "most qualified" candidate.

This will now create more qualified minority candidates and it will (hopefully) get to the point where there are enough minority coaching candidates that the Rooney Rule will no longer be necessary.

Sometimes I wish I was a minority so I could just have everything handed to me in life, but then I come to my senses and realize it makes you a better person when you have to actually earn these things and your accomplishments in life mean something. Thank God I'm a white male, and I don't have to deal with the temptation of being a leech on society.

People have done the legwork and every team already has a minority offensive coach. Also there is plenty of precedent that says this is illegal, so despite the fact the rule is already satisfied expect it to be challenged in court.

all 32 teams will be required to hire a diverse person (female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority to serve as an offensive assistant.

Most teams have 8-12 assistants, and many on the assistant level tend to be former players (either college or pro), so I feel you really need to try if you're avoiding hiring an minority.

I feel this rule is trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. Especially on the assistant level.

Looking at it from NY Giants perspective, they have 10 offensive coaches, including the OC. 4 of them are Women or "People of Color". I'd hazard a bet that every other team's coaching room looks similar.

Typical corporate move to try to appear more diverse to appease the growing audience demanding diversity while doing nothing at all.

Quotas are bad.

Their Running backs Coach, Assistant RBs coach, TEs coach, and Assistant OL coach are all minorities.

Not sure if you were trying to make a joke, but Washington is already compliant with the rule.

So who does this actually affect then?
If it's two or three teams, or somehow none of them at all, then this is just a token gesture (literally), for PR and nothing else.

I feel like a few of these teams are just going to "roony rule it", as in hire a minority coach that has no chance at growth or promotion just to fill the slot.

I haven't gone through every teams coaching staff, but I believe all teams were compliant with this rule before it even became a rule.

The problem, if you believe there is one, isn't on the assistant or coordinator level, it's on the Head Coach level. And it doesn't get aided by watching the same head coaches fail over and over again.

As an industry that mostly profits from minority labor, this is an excellent move by the NFL.
