This has been going on for days, and Nintendo has said nothing about it as of yet:
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/wii-and-dsi-users-cant-download-past-purchases-right-now/1100-6501755/

Even though the DSi Shop was shut down in 2017, and the Wii Shop Channel in 2019, players could still connect to redownload any games that they had previously purchased from those shops. Right now, they can't even do that.

Honestly, almost all of modern gaming should be taken as impermanent. It's not quite subscription-based, but it's close. Physical gaming is becoming worse and worse, not more reliable. Plenty of Facebook games and mobile games are already lost forever. I don't think that make digital purchases any worse unless there's an honest alternative, just be aware of the limitations.

The problem is that there are games that were only available via online stores, and not through a physical medium.

Especially with the Wii and DSi. Some of those games have never even been rereleased elsewhere.

Physical game buyers are going to feel it too. Nearly every game these days gets patches. Those physical copies are going to be playing broken versions of the game in many cases.

The vast majority of games are not Skyrim on the PS3 and will work fine without patches.

Not to mention physical also deteriorates and gets broken over time, nothing is forever.

Physical games seem to be winning the lifespan battle over digital games. Digital stores barely last ten years.

I continue to enjoy Final Fantasy VII PS1 physical.

All of my NES games and CDs from the mid 80s still work fine. The discs are gonna last a hell of a lot longer than the servers will. There's no way you're still gonna be able to download the PSN games you bought for the PS3 in 2040.

i'm going to get modded but this is a non issue, whenever these games stop being supported like this, you'll able to get a rom for them easy peasy

and if you have problem with downloading games illegally then what's the harm in this scenario? they're not making money off these games regardless if they're not selling them. just steal the fucking shit then

Theres nothing special about dsi download servers. Its a computer that holds a file and serves it on request. They have existed for decades before the dsi and will exist for decades after the switch. Stop dodging with its old and unsupported. This is purely an anti-consumer act committed by an anti-consumer company

i don't get the smugness here. it's not like the games have been removed from people's dses and wiis. they still have them.

also you can lose your physical game just as well as somebody can lose their digital one. Lose your physical copy, lose your digital copy. either way you'll have to see if you can find another way to play it. if the game is still sold digitally you can redownload it. if it's available physically (and not marked up) then you can buy it.

Or just download a rom.

This is why I will always consider digital piracy a net positive for society.

Not that I would ever condone violating copyright laws. That's illegal and wrong and you should never do it.

But, at the very least, games that would otherwise have been irrecoverably lost to time are able to be preserved in some form.

Hopefully we get to a point where content preservation isn't reliant on breaking the law. >__>

What about the people who don't have every digital game they bought downloaded to the console? And what if the console fails? Before, you could replace it and redownload all the games you bought. But not anymore.

This is gonna be a huge issue for people who bought a ton of digital games on the PS3. At least with the Wii and DSi, the games were small and I doubt many people bought so much they can't fit it all on a 32 GB SD card. PS3 games can be tens of gigabytes. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have more digital games for the PS3 than they can fit on a 1TB hard drive, the biggest the PS3 supports. And once Sony shuts down the downloading servers in 5 or 6 years, they're fucked.

Nintendo finally says something:
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2022-03-20-nintendo-wii-shop-and-the-nintendo-dsi-shop-channels-have-been-offline-for-days

Nintendo has finally commented on the Wii and DSi eShop channels, after days of unexplained downtime and increasing fan concern over their future.

In a statement to Eurogamer this morning, Nintendo said the storefronts were "undergoing maintenance", with no word on when they might return.

"The Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop are currently undergoing maintenance," a Nintendo spokesperson said. "We will provide an update at a later date."

Prior to the storefronts' disappearance, Nintendo seemingly made no mention of maintenance plans.
