Yeah, there's a lot of stuff from the early anime whose canonical status is very much in question now.

If you read the original writer for the anime's series Bible, he painted the Pokemon world as much more bleak. He also had some rather bizarre and wild ideas on where to take the series, too, before the series itself became a global megahit.

Actually, now that I recall, according to the aforementioned series bible, 10 is considered legal adulthood, so 10-year-olds also have to file taxes and can get married.
