The chance of Russia abiding by the ruling is probably about zero, but as a symbolic thing it's still nice to see the right decision was made, and hopefully this also allows for measures to be taken against other nations that refuse to condemn Russia.

The thing about laws is they only matter as far as you can enforce them. Theres no organization with actual power that exists above countries so international law only matters if other countries can force you to follow it.

No way to actually enforce this ruling. The court could present the case to the UN Security Council, but the fact that Russia has a veto vote on that council makes the whole thing a moo point.

So yeah, the only thing NATO and/or UN could do at this point is write Russia a letter, telling them how angry the UN are at Russia.

For some reason I'm glad I'm not the only person who sees it that way. Russia always seemed like they were unimposing but you never knew what their real goals were.

At least as far as their populace goes I always thought of them as a decent place.

The Idiots in Russia are waging a war like it's 1922 and not 2022. They are forgetting that cameras and drones are everywhere, documenting everything for the World to see.

Did you see the drone that got footage of the Russian troops stopping a car? The Dad gets out with his hands up. They shoot him, then take his terrified Wife and kid into the woods... Never to be seen again. That's not "Ukrainian Proppoganda" or disinformation... It was caught on camera.

Also I heard a dozen or so civilians were waiting in a bread line today and some Russians mowed them all down for no reason.

You can't just "edict" those things away.

Ditching the electoral system would require an amendment.
First-past-the-post would require the political will to undo, as well as explaining why we should.
Gerrymandering is already nominally illegal, except when it's mandatory via the Voting Rights Act, and is constantly challenged when it happens.

Well, okay, but how can Russia as a society make amends? Overthrow Putin and install a new government? I don't think their people want to be isolated if everything is Putin's doing.

Also considering Russia launched a completely unprovoked war on another nation with complete indifference to civilian casualties(many documented cases of deliberate targeting even beyond mere loose cannon soldiers but from the top down ordered) , is making nuclear threats and their leader seems to be in declining mental health...being afraid of Russia is quite logical.

Not that it will change anything, but it's just worth noting at least that this carries more weight than an International Criminal Court (ICC) ruling.

The Ruble is worth less than a quarter as much as it was before Russia invaded Crimea.

The Russian economy has been shit for years.

For perspective, Russia has about 40% of the population of the US, but about 7% of the GDP. The massive corruption as well as the funneling of money to oligarchs instead of reinvestment in the economy/people is why they're so far behind economically.

The "fast track to North Korea" should be verbally repeated. Nominal GDP per capita in Russia is 40k Rubles, which is less than $400 per year (US dollar). Russia will have oil, steel, food and lumber, but not much else.

They're long term ability to wage war will be even worse as they do not make computer chips at all.

As it is their corruption is so bad that troops were trading diesel for liquor and their tires have dry rotted from trucks not being moved or replaced.

This isn't even touching upon troops not being briefed on what they're entering into, or perhaps worse, being told they'll be greeted as liberators when even grandmothers are telling them they are unwanted invaders.

Given the population of Ukraine rejecting these people as invaders, and the historical relations of the two, this would be motivationally equivalent to the US trying to "free" Canada from the grip of an invader, only to find out that the US was the one trying to exert an iron grip on our northern neighbor.

The court ruling itself is not the important part. The important part is this legally makes Russia the equivalent (maybe even more so) of N Korea so that continued sanctions do not violate the WTO (World Trade Organization) and such.

The historical relationship between Russia and Ukraine is just about as worse as it can possibly get for two countries. It's even worse than China / Taiwan or Tibet.

You'd have to go pretty far back into history to find a conflict with this much blood up on the stakes.

Maybe from a strictly military might perspective.

Politically this is more like The Vietnam war. Except imagine that before the Vietnam war started Americans salted the earth around Vietnam and isolated them from all their neighbors, killing them by the millions indiscriminately and actively blocked any help from arriving into the country.
