It's a poor man's attempt to shift the conversation into a field he can control.

Tulsi is a Lt Col in the Army Reserves, in a Civil Affairs and PsyOps unit (per Wiki)

So Jack is saying you can't criticize her unless you're also serving/have family serving (which is logically inconsistent to demand you be Active Duty, if she's just in the Reserves). Which if you do serve/have family serving and do criticize her, he'll likely then go "But why are you disrespecting this higher ranking officer, soldier?"

Yeah it's a weak attempt to appeal to authority, which would be dumb even if it was a good attempt

Criticizing someone as not being leftist for not being a dem is silly. The dems are a corporatist party just like the republicans. There are only a few actual leftists in Congress and the Senate...the type of people who resonate with the Justice Democrats...like 'The Squad'. Bernie and Yang went on Fox News and had townhalls with republicans too. It seems stupid af to isolate yourself into one half of the voter population and only try to get center-left / moderate dems on your side when there are republicans that can be converted to the left as well.

And there are of course more republicans who can become leftist than there are people who traditionally vote democratic that can become leftist because half of the democratic voter population is already leftist...

...And of all the people who don't vote, if they were informed and/or wanted to vote, they would vote leftist (i.e., for Bernie and AOC and 'The Squad' types, not for Biden and Clinton types).
