Based on what little I know of the case, sounds amazing to me. The guy wasn't exactly in the best shape to begin with. He was bad enough not to be eligible for a human heart. We'll know more once they study him, though.

ye they haven't said the cause of death. could be that all the heart did was delay the inevitable with whatever conditions he had. or it turned out that the transplant was less than perfect. hopefully we'll find out. I remember people were following this a lot when it was first announced that the transplant was done successfully

Hope they were able to progress on the research at least.

If he was going to die anyway he was a really good sport to be willing to try a risky experimental procedure; I hope he and his family were able to get some comfort from his extra two months, and that his willingness to do that will have helped progress our understanding of heart surgery and replacement organs and such.

This I hadn't heard about. Huh. I'm not quite as sympathetic if so, but I still appreciate that they let them try a risky surgery that could advance medicine.

There was a bit from the first season of South Park where the doctor announced he'd accidentally replaced Kenny's heart with a baked potato and he had like 10 seconds to live, oh wait that was the movie

Calling it murder is... not quite accurate. He stabbed the guy and left him in a wheelchair. The guy died 20 years later.

I never understood the outrage at that part though. He was repeatedly denied a human heart transplant, so he became a willing test subject with a pig heart. "There are people more deserving than him." Okay, then let those more deserving people get a non experimental transplant. You know, the kind we're sure actually works.

The stop motion animated short The Spirit of Christmas was made by Parker and Stone while attending The University of Colorado.

They showed the video to their friend Brian Graden, at the time a junior executive at Fox, who asked if the short could be made into an animated Christmas card. Graden sent VHS copies of The Spirit of Christmas to 35 of his friends, who passed it onto their friends, and eventually it landed in the hands of George Clooney.

Clooney was a huge fan of it and made tons of VHS copies which he distributed. This is likely why the short got enough attention to lead to the creation of the show South Park.

When South Park finally got picked up Clooney wanted to do a guest voice. Trey/Matt kinda troll people who want to do guest voices, and so they offered Clooney the role of Stan's gay dog, Sparky, whose dialog was entirely barks.

Clooney was such a fan he said yes. They offered a similar offer to Jerry Seinfeld to be a single turkey in a thanksgiving episode (he declined) and let Jay Leno do a "meow" as Cartman's cat (he apparently accepted).

IIRC the first hand transplant was carried out on a criminal, too

Tbh I forgot about the criminal thing. The pig heart stuff was really the only thing that stood out to me

I'm going to say the obvious. Pigs live much shorter lives than humans. Even if they manage to work how to not get it rejected, they would need to do something again in around eight years. You could try gene therapy to extend the life of the pig's heart, but at that point you may as well be working on human genes.

A pig lifespan is 15-20 years. That said are you certain it's how long the heart would last that determines that or is that a guess?

It was the first thing that came up in a search. But they say a heart has a limited number of beats. It's definitely one of the limiting factors.
