Its weird to me how many people here seem to be against work from home. My guess is theyre jealous because they dont have that opportunity.

Im definitely jealous lol. For a while at my job I had the option to work from home on Sundays (which worked out well because I opted to make that a 10-hour day) but a couple weeks ago they were like lol jk no more working from home allowed and I miss the fuck out of it. Getting almost an entire hour back, getting to sleep in, not putting miles on my car, not using up gas, getting to watch TV between calls. Just the best.

F*** it, I should probably just look for a 100% remote job.

That's exactly what it is

I'm jealous as hell of people who are still on wfh, but that's mostly because when I was working from home it was like a year-long vacation

I love WFH. I am extremely more productive at home. People in the office are just a distraction because they keep coming over and trying to talk or bs. Just wastes so much time daily.

Yes.

Companies that leased their office space and didn't own the building they were operating in.

Companies that now do not have to pay phone/internet services, because employees are using their own cellphones and home internet.

Fleets of company cars that are no longer being used, including gas cards that are going unused.

Among MANY other costs attached to running even the smallest of office spaces.

I can only speak from my personal experience, but my wife has been working from home, and her department alone has saved her company close to $2 million but having the 30ish people work from home these past 2 years.

There is no one size fits all here. Think we can agree that the mom/pop insurance company didn't bring in $100 million in profit by sending their 20 employees home and closing the office. My post was driver at bigger corporations.

I mean just quickly:
-Company cars are still being given out and written into employment contracts. Even with WFH, meetings are happening in person. Business trips are being made.
-Companies had to spend millions to ensure people were able to WFH successfully if they did not already have the resources available. Hell my company of 55,000 has given me a work phone, company laptop, monitors, speakers, etc. even though it did not have the infrastructure for thousands of employees to be WFH.
-Companies sign multi-year lease agreements for office space. I'm sure some definitely down-sized, but if you have space in that big skyscraper downtown, you're still paying for it. Not to mention that there has always been a push to bring people back in at least hybrid, so companies weren't giving up those spaces. So you're still paying all the utilities even though the usage is down and there will be savings with it. Not to mention you are still paying for everything that is necessary to house your IT infrastructure.

Not downplaying the savings that come from less paper, mileage reimbursement, pens, whatever. But you are not bringing in $50-100 million in profit from that.

Edit - Actually, I don't honestly know what the fuck I'm talking about. It's probably a lot. But that said, if profits were indeed greater from saving on resources, why not maintain WFH?

I feel like because it needs to be looked at on a case by case basis, there's no real proof one way or the other that WFH is better or worse, so we'll end up talking in circles, so I'll just cut my ties here.

Well clearly the companies think otherwise, and they are the ones who have money on the line.

They would rather have decent collaboration and company culture than save a few pennies on office space.

"Company culture" is bullshit, and is usually toxic.

There is plenty of collaboration in remote working. My wife works 4 days a week from home, and her entire job is coaching and collaborating

Do you have a non personal, selfish reason why people need to return?

Especially a non personal, selfish reason corporations want people back if work is still being completed?

I would love to wfh, and my reasons are entirely selfish. I just think its funny people have to couch it in this Bernie bro rhetoric.

Am I selfish for not wanting to wake up earlier, sit in traffic, and pay shit amounts for gas? Debatable, lol, but working from home doesn't affect my work rate and ethics. Why am I driving to a remote building to provide remote support 5 days a week?

I see these companies need to pay rent for their office buildings but I also need to pay my rent/mortgage for where I live. Makes sense for me to work there, right?

Definitely not Bernie bro rhetoric on the wfh push. I'm not even a Bernie fan.

It is most definitely rich corporations and investors looking for a buck to save since they are losing money on real estate because of wfh.

Many don't want to waste money and gas and time driving up to a job they have proven they can complete from home, and even more productive from home.

The people who want wfh to end are the folks in real estate, jealous people not in a wfh job, and people stuck in their old ways.

As for Biden, this is not a good hill for him to die on. I hope he drops this message soon.

In the US, a whopping 72% of managers currently supervising remote workers would prefer all their subordinates to be in the office, according to recent research for the Society for Human Resource Management, seen by BBC Worklife in July. A June poll of UK managers for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) showed that about half expected staff to be in the office at least two to three days a week.

Had my first taste of WFH this year and I'm never going back. The benefits of working at home for me are through the roof

- introvert here so I get more work done quicker which equals more time gaming
- no getting dressed
- no nasty public restrooms
- no traffic and safety hazards with that
- save gas
- no wear and tear on car
- save money on food
- all breaks are instant as I just get up
- saving time
- can live outside major cities thus less rent
- not as much micromanaging
- no toxic managers who physically make their presence known
- i have social anxiety so that too
- less pollution
- cooking is easier
- household chores getting done in downtime

My job is literally being on a computer all day interacting with people around the world remotely. So already, my job is built around that. To have to go back to office now would just be redundant.

David Graeber's BS jobs book is soo much more relevant and applies to our post pandemic world even moreso.
