I really wanted to like Camilla but she's so badly written T_T

Fates was badly written in general. World building so shitty they literally didn't even give the continent a name.

Yeah the writing in that game is completely atrocious, but Conquest at least has some of the best actual gameplay of the series when it comes to maps, objectives, etc.

And Camilla is so obviously the best character from a unit perspective it is crazy. She comes in the first truly difficult chapter of the game, in the best class of the game, with base stats that are absolutely bonkers. And while one might think a pre-promoted unit showing up in Chapter 10 might "steal experience" (ignoring that being a fallacy in the first place) it's not even true because she gets experience like an unpromoted unit. Also unlike a standard pre-promote she has some of the highest stat growths in the entire game so she'll make good use out of that extra experience. Her decent base magic and high base axe rank means she can instantly use Fates completely busted Bolt Axe as soon as you have it. And that let's her punch holes through even heavy defense enemies that might otherwise wall her. At no point after she joins your team will she not be the single strongest, most dominating unit on your team. And you don't even need to mess with her. She can stay in her base class and be completely effective the entire game. No reclassing or anything needed. Probably one of the single most dominant units in the series.

I think my favorites are either swimsuit Camilla or office Camilla, but they're all great. Casual Camilla is notably sexy too. Oh, and lingerie Camilla.

My Conquest playthrough I banged Camilla, in Birthright I banged Kagaru (whatever the Titty Ninja's name is >_>), and in Revelations I went with Ophelia

Yeah the gameplay is actually good. There is a balance issue in that anyone sharing a class as a Royal is basically invalidated(Why use any archer not named 'Takumi' if you have access to him?), and the less said about Revelations the better.

Chapter 10 in Conquest is probably one of the best designed chapters I've ever played. A noticable difficulty spike, but you're given the tools needed to handle it. You're not babied, nor are you thrown to the wolves without a way to defend yourself. And it's the rare defense chapter that can't be won by sitting your most OP unit in the throne and waiting it out.

When Takumi drains the river, and thus opens up spots for the enemy to sneak past you, that's a nice 'Surprise!' moment. And then peg knights start rushing towards the objective....

So I wouldn't go as far as invalidated. Is Beruka as good as Camilla no, but she's still in an excellent class with decent bases. Less good than the best character in the game is still pretty good. Same goes for Silas/Peri compared to Xander. Or Felicia compared to Elise and Odin compared to Leo.

It's spottier on the Hoshido side if only because Swordmaster and Sniper aren't partiularly good classes (though it is the best Swordmasters have been in a long time), and the Ryoma and Takumi are good because they are given tools to excel despite those class sets, namely in their stats and busted weapons. Yes, there isn't really a reason to have another Archer when you have Takumi but that's more because if it weren't for Takumi you wouldn't have a dedicated Archer at all. Hinoka being the best Peg Knight certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't use other Peg Knights, it's an excellent class.

Ryoma is good because he has pretty solid bases and decent growths, but mostly because his sword, Rajinto, is amazing, providing good 1-2 in a game where 1-2 is a premium. He is held back by his class because Swordmaster is just not a very good class but if you Best Friend Silas/Xander you can get him into the much better Paladin where he can still use Rajinto.

But best unit in the series? No. Birthright frankly isn't tough enough of a game where you need Ryoma and even if you use Ryoma he isn't centralizing dominate force like you would expect a best in series unit to be. A best unit either needs to be almost necessary to use (like Camilla) or breaks the game (Robin, Seth, FE9!Titania, Marcus, Sigurd, FE10!Haar). Even within Fates I would rank Camilla and Xander well above Ryoma. (CQ!10 would be a nightmare without Camilla, and afterwards she remains your primary offensive unit; Xander is the best tank in a game where tanking is an absolute premium).
