Which was in 2019. EVO was initially moved to an online-only event in 2020 and Ultimate wasn't part of the line-up due to its terrible online; and after that, a bunch of behind-the-scenes shit happened that caused EVO to outright be cancelled in 2021, but it's back in 2022, but without Smash, most likely due to Sony owning EVO now.

EVO having two Smash games (Melee and Smash 4) at its main events was a huge sticking point for FGC fans, but was done due to how different Melee and modern Smash is, for better or for worse. But Ultimate did its best to bridge that gap even further, and even before it came out, EVO was wholly prepared to drop both Smash 4 and Melee and only have Ultimate going forward, which they did in 2019. And now...neither.

I know FGC fans are happy to have Smash gone entirely, for whatever reasons they have, but Ultimate's scene is still growing and there's still lots for its players to unlock and master, and EVO would have been a great venue to showcase the fruits of their efforts. But at least without it, another less popular fighting game that would have most likely been overlooked now has a chance of getting in. Not sure what's on the table there, though.

It really is Nintendo's fault. The fgc scene for smash has had to make so many rules and regulations for how the game can be played competitively because all the cool stuff like final smashes are all up to rng.

How is it Nintendos fault? Nintendo designs the game to be fun and to sell. If people cant play the game competitively without handcuffing what the game is then so be it.

It's really not Nintendo's--or rather, Sakurai's--fault as far as designing the game the way it is. Smash is and always has been primarily made for the casual audience in mind, but there are lots of options available to remove the random elements and have more competitive matches, and Sakurai himself is big on fighting games and added a bunch of nuanced elements that have more meaning to competitive players than casual players.

If Nintendo's at fault for anything, it's for not wanting their game to associate with an event now owned and ran by their industry rivals.

No that's the thing. Why not make final smashes something you can build up, rather than a random ball?

They added a Final Smash meter in Ultimate, which when full allows players to use a Final Smash that has lower power than one got from a Smash Ball.

The competitive scene has collectively decided not to use it.

You can. I guess you just haven't played the game.

Nintendo tried to kill so, so many Melee tournaments, including Melee's first showing at Evo. Less irrational fighting game developers actively support tournaments but Melee, and later Smash games, have thriving competitive communities in spite of Nintendo, rather than in support of them

Smash is so big it doesn't need Evo or Nintendos support at all with how dedicated it's fan base is. So the rest of the fgc should just leave it be and let them decide make its own tournaments with its own rules.

I looked it up and even with meter, final smashes are largely unbalanced.

I'm a casual player but don't like items because they fill the screen and slow down the game so much. Are they that popular?

And that's why they're not used.

I'd imagine that most casual players keep most if not all items on.

I've played Ultimate for over 2000 hours and didn't know FS meter was a thing lol. I might try it out sometime but I'd probably only do it once.
