The US had a nuke 75 years ago. How is it possible that some countries still don't have access to them? I'm assuming if Ukraine had nukes then Russia wouldn't have invaded

Becoming a nuclear power this late in the game is pretty difficult. The amount of treaties, red tape, etc. involved in such a weapons program will make your life hell. And if you do it for belligerent reasons, you'll be sanctioned and isolated into oblivion like North Korea. Russia only gets away with it because they had them early enough to avoid the major consequences, and even then, look at how despised they are for having nukes and not playing nice diplomatically.

Weapons grade enriched uranium/plutonium isnt exactly something you can just buy anywhere

also Ukraine had nukes and gave them up as part of the independence deal. But I think theirs were just leftover Soviet weapons that were in Ukraine after the USSR split up?

if everyone has nukes, no one has nukes and so the ensuing arms race would produce giga nukes

the regular ones are bad enough

Nuclear-armed states don't like it when non-nuclear states get them. Although it's understandable in a case like North Korea where they just might be stupid enough to use them

Ukraine was the third largest nuclear power. They were basically forced to give up their nukes in the 90's.

Because the vast majority of the world signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty outlawing the construction of nuclear weapons. Only India, Pakistan, Israel and South Sudan have yet to sign it (and North Korea pulled out of it).

Also Ukraine did inherit nuclear weapons from the collapse of the Soviet Union, but willingly gave them up in signing the Budapest Memorandum which guaranteed that the US, UK and Russia would respect Ukraine's territorial sovereignty. Another potential problem with this whole situation as Russia is blatantly violating it right now and the US and UK are not really doing anything to stop them which could lead to other nations blatantly breaking treaties and agreements with the US and UK as it'll be seen that the they won't honor them anyway.

They either don't have the means to develop/store/whatever them, or America pinky promised to defend them if they didn't have any.
