Sometimes the boost to morale by standing and fighting is what matters most for the invaded forces. The fact is, if he leaves or stays and Russia wins the war by totally claiming the entire country then it will become a Russian puppet state. And regardless of that, if he stays or leaves he and his family will be targeted by Russian forces and/ or assassins. I'd certainly understand him sending his family out of the country and in to hiding in the territory of an allied nation for their safety. But he's upholding his elected duty to the last. And because his citizens are dying, he won't let himself abandon them. I hope he survives, but historically that's not very likely even if Ukraine does hold out long enough that Russia withdraws and possibly forces a change to borders and claims some towns and their citizens in the process. And honestly, it's those everyday citizens who my thoughts are with most.
