Thats not to say they cant be good but it seems like developers AND gamers (including game journalists) think open world = good

It's like Assassin's Creed except you shoot robots and your main character is ugly instead.

The release of the first Horizon is really significant to me in that I was done with open worlds

There are plenty of unpopular open world games. The "bad open world games" that people moan about like Assassin's Creed are just inoffensive and safe. Most people who are fans of these types of games aren't so because "hurr durr I like open world no matter what".

Wow, it actually just clicked with me that both Horizon games have released right alongside a much bigger competitor

The next Horizon will come out a few days before GTA VI

That was clearly somewhat of an exaggeration but open world games are way too oversaturated

Gamers want a lot of value for their dollar and open world games are overall the best way to provide that for single player games. It is what it is.

I love my 8-20 hour games but they're just not as popular.

Yeah honestly he summed up my feelings about the first game. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was super annoyed about having to constantly stop and watch an animation to gather resources instead of picking them up while running like BotW. I can't believe they didn't change that for the sequel. The hype around FW was almost tempting me to pick it up but now I feel reassured that I'd definitely regret doing that.

I don't love these kinds of open world games generally, but Horizon and Ghost of Tsushima were both so polished and fun to play that I think they were great examples of how good that genre can be.

That's how I see it for the most part (although I like a generic Ubisoft open world game now and again).

Gameplay wise the games aren't anything new. But they're polished, solid, fun to play, look gorgeous and generally have a good story. They overall accomplish what they're trying to do.

Ubisoft games are usually pretty fun too but they tend to have boring stories and some other issues like microtransactions, too much bloat or whatever.

Probably one of the most overrated games I have ever played.... and i hate to use the term "overrated"
It's kinda of soulless and bland even though it controls well and sounds awesome on paper.
The dialogue, voice acting and story are also atrocious. How can anyone take that seriously?
