If it gets fucked up in any way, it will spread its radiation all over and affect more than just Chernobyl.

The terrain is pretty accessible and easy to set up a supply line through

the strategic importance is if Putin bombs the storage facility, the force of the explosions are gonna kick up all kinds of radioactive waste and spread it no telling where or how much

The destroyed reactor is pretty harmless now. The original "sarcophagus" structure is still mostly intact, inside the safe confinement structure. There's been pictures inside the safe confinement, and even in the basement where there's a huge glob of decaying uranium.
As long as you don't fuck around in there for very long at a time, you'll be fine.

Blowing it the fuck up, and spreading the remnants into the air, will be complete bad news. You don't want that shit in your lungs or intestines.

Of course. I actually only know this because I've seen elevation maps with roads and stuff of the area. Obviously even the "safe" areas aren't ideal for storing stuff in, BUT given how military personnel are historically considered disposable... Heck, my roommate was exposed to enough radiation in the Iraq War that his teeth are going to just fall out of his teeth in the next decade or two. Nothing can be done about it, there's just been a bunch of damage as a result of exposure. Means he's got plenty of money from disability payments plus his retirement pay. But yeah... I have no doubt Russia would use the area for such purposes even at the expense of their own soldiers.

It's a relatively easy target to strike that would have catastrophic consequences if they did. It's probably more about forcing Ukraine to deploy a portion of their military to defend it than it is actually capturing it. If they can spread the Ukrainian military thin enough by forcing them to protect locations like this it will make it easier for them to attack their primary targets.
