Have a friend online I met in FF and they lived in Japan for some years and yeah, the stories they told about what it's like to work there would put America to shame for the most part. Their main complaint wasn't that it was hard but there's a lot of traditions you are pretty much expected to follow or you get shunned and treated poorly.

Like one thing they mentioned is that if their day wasn't full or they finished early (they were in education) they were expected to sit around at least until the day was actually supposed to end "just in case" they were needed. It was also frowned upon for them to use their phone at work during break or downtime to browse or distract themselves.

Somewhat, I like their entertainment and overall culture but the workaholic aspect as well as the food aren't really for me.

Not particularly. I like some anime and the cuisine, but that's it.

I liked persona 5 a lot, and that's basically a super realistic look at Japan right

japanese-made games can be fun but anime seems to be so full of garbage
their work culture seems even worse than ours and i'm not a fan of what seems to be a much-higher emphasis on conformity, hierarchy, and ritual

Yes, I am a Japanese man born in a white man's body. One day I shall go to Japan and impress the locals with my vast knowledge of Japanese anime and manga and they will accept me as one of their own.

I was until this week. "Idol culture" and the unhealthy expectation cringey fans have about wanting to believe they are in a pretend relationship with vtubers is just way too much for me. Especially when the company they work for enables those fans by firing anyone who even hints at merely talking to a man irl because they whale for their overpriced merch. I get that there are cultural differences or whatever, but I grew up here, and after this week consuming Hololive content makes me feel gross.

God this, and since it was mentioned I have to take a very harsh shot at K-pop/K-pop idol culture yet again and say that it and everyone involved with it should be fucking ashamed of themselves. Especially the so-called "stans" who claim to love these people who are abused and gaslit to the point where they're no longer allowed to be actual people.

I ain't big on kulture in general. I like a lot of things they produce, though. Mainly media.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFXIII for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.
Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIII for 360 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

their entertainment media is good, and i like some of the aesthetics and stuff of some japanese things like samurai etc. but things like their work culture and their opinions on foreigners are incredibly shit
