Why is the distinction important?

I distinguish between the two because neo Nazi seems more accurate than Nazi in most cases. Whether or not its important probably depends on the context. In most cases its probably not. Its not something I correct other people over, and its not something Id have commented on if someone else hadnt mentioned it first.

That being said nobody f****** thinks that there's Nazis still around from world war II attacking a book reading session. What's the point in differentiating a Neo-Nazi from Nazi they're both Nazis and shitty garbage human beings.

I get your point that the term has been used liberally, but his quote is still accurate - look at this very topic where Ast whatever and AloneIBreak want to spend time saying "Well actshually they aren't Nazis.." in describing people with Nazi paraphernalia and attitudes

In which context do you feel it's important to distinguish it? All contexts I can think of are in the realms of academia...

The distinction between Neo-Nazis and Nazis is as important as the distinction between the three different iterations of the Ku Klux Klan. Which is to say, it's not important in any meaningful way.

When you say Nazis disrupted a book reading at a library in Rhode Island, no one thinks you mean time traveling German fascists.

Well looking up the definition it seems everyone is a Ephebophile at some point in their life:
