A certain thing that happened, something you enjoyed doing, entire magical playthroughs, those kinds of things. Whatever has stuck with you over the years.

Once, years ago when playing Smash Brawl with a now ex-friend, he was Link and I was Ike. It came down to the final stock for both of us, but he had a Final Smash. We jumped at each other, and he activated it... but I countered, apparently at the perfect moment. It didn't hurt him, but it somehow canceled out his FS. We were both dumbstruck, but I recovered first and launched him. Best win I ever experienced.

In Dishonored, I shot Samuel in the face when he betrayed me, but before he could fire off the flare. That'll learn 'em.

I love it when your raid pulls together for one final attempt for the night and manages to kill it. It happened to mine a few times in Vanilla Classic, and with Vashj and Illidan in TBC Classic so far.

We fuckin' dunked on Archimonde, though. No one even died on our very first attempt ever, and half those other guys had never even been in Hyjal before.

back in like 2000 i had a halfling rogue in everquest

i regretted making a halfling but i was already like level 20 so i didn't want to reroll*

but there was a mask in a high level dungeon that i could get to turn me into a dark elf

so i hoofed it across the continent, literally snuck through a level 40 dungeon, and chilled near the boss that i knew dropped it until a party running the dungeon was kind enough to let me snag the mask (it was BoP so no one was farming it)

then ran like hell outta there

that was back when dungeons weren't instanced, you could actually lose all your gear if you died somewhere you couldn't get back to. also teleporting across the continent cost money because you needed to find a high level wizard or druid to do it.

*also this was when i was a tween and sucked at mmorpg's in general, but also EQ was a lot grindier than modern MMORPG's

for many christmases in a row, me and my brother would wake up early and play through new super mario bros wii together. I'm not totally sure why this became a tradition but it got to the point where we didn't even really need to check with the other, it just sort of happened. I know a lot of people aren't super enthused about the new 2D marios but the multiplayer hijinks in it just made it perfect for us

I remember going to my friends house and playing Smash Bros Melee and Soul Calibur 2 all day. I would bring my memory card over and we would our make our Chaos race and fight in Sonic Adventure 2.

My strict parents never let me go to sleepovers when I was a kid but my friends eventually convinced them to let me spend the night one time. That night we stayed up playing Melee and Starfox Assault and Kirby Air Ride and Naruto Clash of Ninja and Mario Party 4. Such great memories with the Gamecube man

When I was 15 and my brother was 16, we didnt have jobs yet or much of an allowance, so Christmas and birthdays was the only way to get new games from our parents. Super Smash Bros Brawl was coming soon and it was the most hyped game ever and we absolutely NEEDED to have it DAY ONE but we didnt have any money!

We heard our local video game store was having a tournament for the midnight release of Brawl, so we both entered. At least wed get to try out the game, right? Well after like three hours, I ended up winning the tournament! As a prize I got a copy of Brawl and some store credit to buy a bunch of other games (I remember getting Luigis Mansion, Viewtiful Joe, and DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3). I thought we wouldnt get to have Brawl for weeks, and I ended up getting it for free on day one! And my brother and I snuck back home at like 4:00 in the morning without my parents ever finding out. It was truly one of the best days of my life (my life peaked at 15 lmao ).

I was fighting cpu Bowser in a random SSBM match in front of my aunt when she suddenly said "Watch out for his spikes, they're very sharp." And my cousin and I just lost it because that's such an irrelevant detail in Smash but she said it so sincerely and innocently.

A friend and I had a pokemon battle in HGSS or BW2 and we both open the match with ampharos. Later we're going through each other's storage and find we each have a carvanah with the oh-so-clever name Scary Fish.

Fighting a cousin in Melee and he keeps getting annoyed when I dodge his Link's downward thrust and hookshot him with Young Link. Eventually he's had enough when I do it one more time and he slaps me IRL and I just fall over laughing.

Beating Mike Tyson on NES when I was like 6 or 7 years old. Startropics was another great win for me as a young kid figuring all that out with little guidance.

Beating FF7 for the first time was awesome too as I didn't have any of the strongest stuff and was kinda underleveled as I'd never played a JRPG before.

Being too young to really appreciate Metal Gear Solid's narrative but still knowing it was about some real shit. Seemed like no game before had stakes like this did. You wanted to see Snake survive and see him save the world.

Then getting older and realizing it was totally fucking crazy and didn't make any sense.

Then getting even older and appreciating the wacky but still very grounded aspect to it all. How is it a game could be so realistic yet so fantastic?

  • Going to the Forest Temple for the first time in Ocarina of Time. This was some magical shit for me, I was like 7 and all the Redeads and big demon dudes with spears were scaring me and I kinda wanted to stop playing, but I pushed through and got to the best dungeon in that entire series. The Forest Temple is so fucking cool.
  • The Opera Scene in Parasite Eve. Also playing through Parasite Eve period. Love PE.
  • Playing Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe with the homies. We all hated PSO2 though so that kind of put a damper on the continuation. Phantasy Star Online though is one of my big creative influences, and I'll always have love for what the series once was while ignoring what it's become.

Its all just pattern recognition+reaction in the end. If you're competent and you try enough times you'll get it. And I played the SHIT out of it. To this day I still don't think it's that bad if you figure out how to dodge those uppercuts.
