Okay, what should be cut?

Note sports are usually paid for by donated booster funds specifically for that purpose or from proceeds from big dollar sporting events, so thats not where cuts can come from.

You don't understand how academic positions work. They're all the same position, but different stages. You get increases in salary with those stages, but an assistant professor does the same shit an associate professor or a full professor does.

Is it too much to ask for people to just not talk about shit they don't understand?

Feel free to explain how wikipedia is totally off basis about what an associate professor is.

Seems pretty obvious it's a position between being an assistant professor and a full professorship. Almost like being a sous chef is a position between being a line cook and being an executive chef....

It far more analogous to being in the same position and getting incremental raises. But you just seem to want to say: "no, u", so I suppose it's whatever.

You're basically saying the hierarchy in academia is meaningless. Which is probably true some level. It's also not an exclusive trait of academia.

At the end of the day it's rediculous to carry on this notion of "there is no difference" when there clearly is, even if the only real concrete difference is how much they're compensated.

Let's put it in an easier more concrete form:

When a chef quits, do they hire a sous chef to replace? No, they hire a chef.

When a full professor retires, do the hire a full professor to replace? Almost always the answer is no, they hire an assistant professor.

People make lateral moves to other universities all the time, but the only purpose of the title is to estabilish tenure status and set pay lines.

There are no full professorship positions (a few exceptions, of course).

They would probably promote a sous chef to the higher position if it opened up and they're qualified to fill it, just like an associate professor would be promoted to a full professorship if one opened up and they were deemed qualified to fill it.

colloquially speaking, an associate professor is a professor and you have to be intentionally trying to miss the point

as far as LITERAL JOB TITLES go, an associate professor is one rank on the path to becoming a fully tenured Professor.

im sure you're playing dumb so ill leave it at that

The slots are literally the same, jesus.

To get promoted to a higher position in other job, that position needs an opening. That is not how it works in academia. It's all one single slot.
