High horse? I am arguing that people without a degree and good circumstances like luck should be able to buy a house TOO.

Or did you STILL fail to read this fucking thread?

A 23 year old single MOTHER (child expenses) with a job that requires no higher education could buy a house.

vs. me who saved money over several years as I did not have a child and had a higher education job at a big name company

Like bro, you want to portray yourself in a poor way? check yourself

I'm not your fucking bro. My brother understands basic concepts and can actually read, please don't insult me by insinuating we share any genetics. Yuck. I've asked you numerous times not to do it, try and be an adult for once please and not resort to doing things you know offend me.

And I love how you continue to handwave and flat out ignore that it is perfectly fucking possible to buy a home without the advantages and priveleges you enjoy. Quite frankly it's offensive and insulting that you think they can't. Really speaks volumes.

But keep being pissed a 23 yr old can't buy a $950k house and any other subjects you don't fucking understand

What do you think my parents $30k house they bought in the 80s, not in a prime place like the Bay Area is valued at today?

In addition, this is no different than you same stupid argument that houses go up over time not realizing how wages did not keep up which TONS of people ITT pointed out but you somehow could not comprehend

Thank you for removing any doubt anyone may have had that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, nor can you read for shit. Again, what's worth more in hte bay area: the house or the land it sits on? Think real hard, the answer has already been given.

I already acknowledged wages, you have to read better. Ask for help if need be. Assuming anyone can stand to be in a room with you for more than 30 seconds

Why do you think it matters when the purchase includes the lot and it's still unaffordable?

Additionally, to further drive the point home that TC doesn't know dick about real estate, he's also confusing land value with property value.

I guarantee the land that $950k house in his totally true and I'm sure not made up at all because nobody lies on the internet story sits on probably accounts for a large chunk of that value. Anyone that has even casually dipped their toes into real estate undertands this and has seen it on Zillow dozens of times. Unless that house has history there's no way a basic ass home increased 10x in value to almost $1m, it's the land. You can always build another house, can't make more land.
I was curious if it checked out at all too, so i did some detective work.

If you pull up a list of GM factories past/present there's really only one spot where anything close to a three bedroom for $950k can even exist. Most of these plants are in the much more affordable Midwest. You'd live like a king there for that price point.

There was a plant in South Gate, California that is no longer open. No other location seems to even come close in the housing prices. Conceivably, the person in the OP could be from there or a surrounding area maybe.

Because it makes his point irrelevant. I don't think it's egregious that someone just starting their life with no education and an entry level job can't afford prime real estate. Location matters.
It is completely doable for that same 23 yr old single mother to get a nice house $0 down in a rural area as a starter home. Keep it 5-10 years and sell, use the profits to move closer to where you want to be and hopefully you have a better job or degree within that 5-10 yrs.

TC wants to throw on a rainbow wig and floppy shoes and act like it's impossible because, again, he's a fucking noob when it comes to real estate.

No it doesn't. You might as well insist he knows how much the attached garage is worth compared to the rest of the structure. It's all one purchase regardless, and for established homes buyers typically don't know or care what the lot is worth vs. the structure on it.

At this point you're being obtuse. At least I hope so. It's incredible to me that you want to continue this charade that affordable housing doesn't exist. You're wrong, period. Be an adult and own it. You said a really stupid thing and used a terrible, awful, possibly worst I've ever seen "example" (some random block of text with no source anyone could have made up) to prove your idiotic point. Which I'm still not even sure what that point is since affordable housing literally exists regardless of what you foolishly choose to believe and excrete as the truth.

A home not in the Bay Area in 1988 would have been more like $20k to $30k.

What is $20k x 11 ? $220k

So it seems you are infact incorrect. My parents home was a $30k home.

@Cleo_II
What am I incorrect about exactly? As I said, US median 1988 housing cost was $210k adjusted for inflation. At the time it was about $85-90k without so I dont know where youre pulling 20-30k.

Here is where I pulled the data: https://dqydj.com/historical-home-prices/

I agree that the cost of housing has gone up. But its closer to double than 11 times. I still think housing being twice as more expensive now is still a very significant increase. The market demands a two income household so a single parent buying a house is extremely difficult today.

You keep saying this but fail to prove it. You seem to think a townhouse for $130k is a really good deal?

That is the only thing you even attempted to try and prove your false assertion.

Meanwhile, many users, not just me, discussed actual home prices.

Fyi, the average is around $300,000

$30k was from the area I am familiar with as that it was homes had cost at the time. Maybe not the fanciest, but great for new families.

I thought you were comparing just in the Bay Area so that is why I was saying in other places you could find $30k houses.

In any case, here is breakdown by state:

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/06/27/how-much-housing-prices-have-increased-since-1940-in-every-state.html

But now I know where you are coming from. The average itself just went up $100k.

I guess it would then be important to see how wages have paced with this.

Yeah I wasnt talking about SF particularly, just that its very possible someone bought a $70k house in 1988 that jumped to $900k now in that kind of market but its not the norm when looking at total US numbers.

The last year for housing has been bonkers though. I believe just 2021 saw around 20% median increase. And were on track for another 20% for 2022 according to some estimates. My current house estimate went up over $100k already and we just closed it in November (SoCal market). Low inventory and a rush to lock in rates before they climb is driving some kind of frenzy. Wfh is allowing tech people to buy up all the cheaper housing in full cash, locking out local families from owning. Its definitely a shit show.
