Have these critics seen the whole thing or just the first few episodes? Tbh even the original was pretty awkward in the beginning.

I still don't know why anyone thought this series needed a reboot, but I'd be willing to give it a season or two, see if it can establish its own identity.

Eh, a show like this showed its true identity in the trailer. I feel like it's more common for comedies to be awkward in the first season while they find their footing. Always Sunny, Seinfeld, lots of instances where they haven't figured out the best riffs and relationships amongst the characters yet.

This is a drama, you should be able to tell within a few episodes whether you're going to like it or not.

You're telling me a beloved sitcom from the 90's isn't doing as well after being reimagined as a serious drama?

Im finishing up on a 40 minute review. They're really favorable of it and made it sound super interesting. Sounds like if you're expecting the characters to match up with their counterparts, you'll get in your own way tho. You really gotta give into it being a reimagining. Which seems obvious, but some just can't let go. Which is fine, it just doesn't seem made for them.

But it it's to be judged on its own merit, why even name it Bel Air at all? Why not make an original show? It's not the audience's fault for association, they're literally creating the premise of the show around that very association. So they gotta deliver extra hard.

Meh. A later seasons of mash style approach would be fine where its more into drama and still about comedy just as much but from what I understand its like they decided to go full on with the "why don't he love me man?!?!?!" stuff as the main focus.

Which tbf that was an incredible scene, but it was all the more powerful because it wasn't common in the og version.

But there are also really good movies and shows based around that type of drama. You just gotta disconnect from the bias that comes with wanting it to be something it's not trying to be. I dunno. Not like I can say from any personal viewing. But it looks good.

My bad, completely missed this response last night.

It's named Bel Air because it uses the premise of the show to do something completely different with it. Which, if you're not a fan of that, that's reasonable. I'm more of the mind of why bring something back if you're just gonna do the same thing with it. I love the alternate reality dark tone to something we know as light. And if you didn't change the characters enough to fit a more serious and dark tone, it would just end up not knowing what it wanted to be. Granted Dark Comedy is a thing. But it definitely wouldn't work with the tone they're going for.

Btw, they do easter eggs a lot in the beginning apparently. But I never cared for that. Usually don't even notice.

The thing Im most concerned about is that the guy playing Carlton doesnt seem charismatic enough in the trailer

What do you mean? Anchorman 2 was almost as good as the first one and Bad Boys for Life was way better than the second movie

I'mma wait til it comes out and if I can see it, before I defend it anymore. You guys might be willing to throw it away before it even comes out. But I'm not willing to put it on a pedestal until I actually seen it myself. All I seen is a long review. Which oddly enough still seems to be the most insight here >_>. You wouldn't guess by how sure of themselves people are.

Most comedy sequels that far out are. Which is why it's probably good Fresh Prince isn't going comedy. Name one comedy show you guys are watching that ended and came back 10+ years later

This. I think most people don't know why this project got started. I love that Will Smith got on board with doing a whole reimagining of the series instead of coming after them for using the Bel Air name. I really hope it turns out great.

This should of been it's own show I can't think of a successful reboot of a beloved comedy drama turned into a gritty drama.

Maybe not enough fat jokes or short jokes going around? or enough throwing Jazz around?
