in the u.s. i mean. Major retail stores. iirc i have heard varying answers on if they can. Iirc they usually don't even call the police when they detain one

No they can't you can coax someone to come with them but putting your hands on them is a lawsuit

i used to work at walmart. i saw a lot of stuff happen. one store was really aggressive about it. i mean like if one of the chubby asset protectin workers couldn't catch up to a shoplifter and there was a manager coming in from the entrance the manager would tackle/grab/pin the shoplifter down until ap caught them. they even busted out the plastic wire cuffs on a kid once. then i got transferred to a different walmart and they just didn't care lmao.

In general they can, but they can be sued for excessive force if that takes place. They also need to pretty much observe and have video evidence of the crime. I'm also pretty sure that the individual security person can be sued. This is a much bigger deterrent than the police, since they don't have a union and fellow cops protecting them. Walmart or whoever doesn't give a shit about you. They'll leave you out to dry.

Depends on the State, but generally yes, a suspected shoplifter can be detained by the store if there's probable cause.
