This is a documentary called A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Moon. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, you can skip to about 33:00 and much more around 35:00 when they show how Houston had a back up channel to communicate with the astronauts.

The documentary claims that the astronauts were actually in Earth orbit and never crossed the Van Allen belt of radiation.

The documentary also claims that what appears to be a round Earth was actually achieved with camera trickery. Basically, the blacked out the interior of the shuttle so that sunlight could not come in. They then set up the camera at the far back of the shuttle and point it at a round window. The window frames the Earth to make it look like you're looking at a round Earth instead of just a portion of the Earth through a round window.

This creates the illusion that they are much further away from Earth instead of just being in Earth orbit.

You do know that the Soviet Union was intercepting any and all transmissions coming from and going to the moon? If the astronauts were never in space to begin with, the Soviet Union would have been on that in an instant and been more than overjoyed in letting the world know.
