Some key differences from the movie:

MC is male,, and a terrible husband,, keeping his wife at bay constantly. The guy he works withinstead is an accused serial rapist with some questionable history..

The virus in the book kills you via heart attack, keeps the supernatural elements more minor.

Rather than having Sadako as the killer, the book reveals the deaths are caused by a digitally transmitted smallpox virus that mixed with Sadakos psychic powers and pure hate when she was killed.

The hatred, meanwhile, is because the last man in the country with smallpox kills her out if disgust after trying to rape her and finding out she's intersex.

There'sno phone call in the book, instead the tape ends with a message that you will die in 7 says, ending with unless...and a final message on how to avoid the virus curse, except that final bit was taped over before the start of the book.

And most notably, the book is utter garbage compared to the movie.

the first book is the sane one

but really the ring franchise has 2 good things

and the first american ring movie

every thing else goes in bizarre directions

ringu becomes all about psychic ppl

and the ring well the ring 2 was just stupid

and rings had a good idea that it threw away

I have a copy of the translated original novel Parasite Eve. It is also way WAY more hardcore and fucked than the video game based on it.

I really like having a copy as a curio. Mainly as a rare video game history thing. The book itself is pretty good, way more serious and horrific than the video game's sci-fi fun. The author is a pharmacologist that cites his real sources when he is grounded in reality and isn't advancing the sci-fantasy elements of the plot. I read it about a decade ago when I was just out of highschool and for the last few segments of the book I was living the 'WTF AM I READING" Ronald Mcdonald meme.

I got super lucky and found my copy of the book being given away at a public library cleaning its old stock out back then.

Ahh, that sounds really cool, actually! I love when authors are versed in science enough to mix some real science into sci-fi.
