Calling yourself an asshole is just a save face from people who pick at every little thing. It's admittance, so there's no reason for a judgemental person to pick at you. Them doing so seems redundant after you do it yourself.

You don't have to care to step in front of others to avoid extra annoyance. Calling yourself an asshole is strategic. People only really get irritated at it if you're really an asshole. Going off on racist rants and shit

That's just an example. My point is people know what kinda person they are, they even admit it and call themselves what they are and yet gets mad when they're told what they are.

There's a difference in telling a person what they already know vs telling them with the intent of extremely offend.

Example
Person: I'm a loser
Other person: Yeah I know you're a fucking fatass loser

A term that isn't necessarily offensive can still convey offense by the intent of its usage. Like, sucking cock isn't inherently a bad thing, but you know the intent if some enraged person calls you a cocksucker, and that can be enough.

Also, coming from someone else can make it seem worse. "I hurt myself all the time, but it hurts worse when it comes from someone else" is something I've heard in group therapy.
