The most popular anime series right now have really great animation but generic storylines and rushed character development. So I guess for most people as long as the fight scenes look nice it doesn't matter if everything else is just a copy and paste from other popular series --- Fire tempers iron and temptation steels the just ... The vast majority of watchers are tweens (or some age category around it) so the fact that the story/characters/writing in general aren't super compelling isn't really all that relevant. Hence why most of the stuff that gets big are things with good animation, or things that you look back on with a level of embarrassment (unless you go full on weeb, at which point you get arrested for CP). There is also something about the "lowest common denominator" as that holds true across all media. Things that are easy to digest, regardless of content, tend to have a mass appeal sheerly by virtue of there being a large amount of the population that can't actually wrap their mind around much more. There is the old saying of "imagine the average person's intelligence and then consider that 50% of the other people are dumber than them." --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome?
