I find the theme and tone inconsistent. Am I supposed to be outraged at the labor exploitations of the 1930s or believe in re-incarnation or taoism or buddhism or am I just supposed to think pirates are cool? Is randomly killing like the first guy okay?

I like the song though but it is weird. I guess all 4 of 'em wrote it so each verse is very different?

But it's got the same name as the band, almost.

Maybe the guy is getting re-incarnated and getting slightly better each time, like civilization's progress in general. The damn builder dies for the sins of the past highwayman. If that's the case it's seems kind of naive and apologetic and fascist. We should excuse the horrors of history in exchange for progress?

But then again, the tone of the song is pretty sad, so even with their old-school futurism (not a good thing) they seem to recognize how fucked it is, yet they can't shake the boyish wonder at spaceships, soldiers, and manly man stuff.

It's a song about a vampire who gets himself into just the zaniest situations.

nah but he dies in constructing the hoover dam and then gets on a spaceship?

like, if that is the case, we needed slightly more context clues in the song, I think.

He falls into the Hoover Dam and it takes him so long to get out that they've developed space travel.

Plenty of context in the song.

but I don't think ANYONE could escape from being mixed into solid cement and then crushed under the pressures of the damn. even a vampire?

112 people died in the construction of the boulder dam, as it was originally known

It's not a bad song, but I've never been a big fan of Kristofferson.

I've been into country for years, its an old staple of class country for me. I quite like it.

The song was the result of a vivid dream after a night of heavy drinking and is explicitly about reincarnation according to the song writer.

Great stuff, a good read! I no longer find the theme inconsistent.
