That is crazy. No wonder it is spreading so easily.
If this mutates to be deadlier...we in big trouble.

A study conducted by the researchers from the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan has now claimed that the Omiron variant of coronavirus can remain alive on skin and plastic more than the earlier variants of the virus like Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma.

The study is yet to be peer-reviewed and has been posted recently on BioRxiv. According to the findings, Omicron can remain alive on the skin for over 21 hours and more than eight days on any plastic surface. This might be the reason why Omicron is spreading faster compared to other strains, the study said.

Omicron, on the other hand, can survive on a plastic surface for 193.5 hours, more than 8 days.
On skin samples, the average virus survival times were 8.6 hours for the original version, 19.6 hours for Alpha, 19.1 hours for Beta, 11 hours for Gamma, 16.8 hours for Delta and 21.1 hours for Omicron, the study claimed.

For the study, the researchers compared the survival time of the other variants and concluded that the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta variants could remain alive on plastic surfaces for 56 hours, 191.3 hours, 156.6 hours, 59.3 hours, and 114 hours, respectively.

Another version of omicron is spreading in Asia and parts of Europe. And it shows signs that it could be slightly more contagious than omicron. Where did this new variant come from?

If it mutates again oh well. We're passed the point of containment. Best we can hope for is each strain becomes less and less fatal.

https://www.ibtimes.com/ba2-variant-15x-more-infectious-original-omicron-strain-expert-3384266

The new COVID-19 Omicron subvariant BA.2 may be more contagious than the original Omicron variant, a top expert from Denmark's top infectious disease authority has said.
The Omicron subvariant, dubbed stealth Omicron, could be 1.5 times more transmissible than the BA.1 sub-lineage, preliminary calculations show. However, an analysis by the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), Denmarks top infectious disease authority, found no indication of an increase in the risk of hospitalization for the BA.2 subvariant.
"There is some indication that it is more contagious, especially for the unvaccinated, but that it can also infect people who have been vaccinated to a greater extent," SSI's technical director and chief epidemiologist Tyra Grove Krause said in a Wednesday media briefing.
"There is no evidence that the BA.2 variant causes more disease, but it must be more contagious," Danish Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said at the news conference.

To my knowledge, it's been shown repeatedly that the odds of contracting Covid from surface contact are so low that you might as well not even bother worrying about it. Assuming that this study is found valid, does it even change that sentiment?

Yes, but the longer it lasts the higher that chance becomes. Essentially to infect yourself from surface transmission you gotta stick your finger in your nose or mouth or something.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/severe-covid-19-illness-trends-still-rising-in-most-regions-canada-s-top-doctor-says-1.5756485

Canada's top doctor says even though the average daily COVID-19 case count across the country is down 30 per cent compared to last week, it's not an accurate reflection of the state of the pandemic.

Dr. Theresa Tam says targeted testing policies and reduced testing continue to underestimate the number of true infections, noting severe illness trends are still rising in most jurisdictions and hospitalization rates are increasing across all age groups.

This may come as a shock to you, but I asked the question in perfectly good faith. It took me a year and a lot of self-convincing to get to the point where I wasn't blowing money on alcohol wipes scrubbing every single surface that'd come in contact with the outside world. I'm only now starting to feel okay with going out for a jog after work (and subsequently getting sweat rolling down my face and near my nose and mouth) instead of hopping straight into the shower.

So if you have some knowledge to impart upon me that could help me better understand the situation and better keep myself and those around me safe, please shove your unnecessary hostility back up the same ass from whence you pulled it and just say what you mean plainly.

This allows them to vaccinate for 24 specific variants at once. They would still need to make and test modifications for new substantially different variants as they appeared and there's no getting around that until they can teach immune systems to target something within the virus that does not substantially mutate over time.

The people who would most likely get this vaccine are most likely already vaccinated with the current vaccines and boosters.

At this point those who aren't vaccinated for Covid, won't be unless truly forced but that won't happen due to vaccine mandates getting struck down by conservative judges.

Thanks for the link. It's all a bit over my head but I'll give it a go.
here are probably the most relevant/useful bits:

Case reports indicate that SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted between people by touching surfaces an ill person has recently coughed or sneezed on, and then directly touching the mouth, nose, or eyes

Findings of these studies suggest that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection via the fomite transmission route is low, and generally less than 1 in 10,000, which means that each contact with a contaminated surface has less than a 1 in 10,000 chance of causing an infection

Concentrations of infectious SARS-CoV-2 on outdoor surfaces could be expected to be lower than indoor surfaces because of air dilution and movement, as well as harsher environmental conditions, such as sunlight.

hand hygiene could substantially reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from contaminated surfaces, while surface disinfection once- or twice-per-day had little impact on reducing estimated risks

In most situations, cleaning surfaces using soap or detergent, and not disinfecting, is enough to reduce risk. Disinfection is recommended in indoor community settings where there has been a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 within the last 24 hours.

they also mention that the numbers in this tend to worse than in actuality, because tests in this area are usually very worst-case, doing things like absolutely slathering virus all over surfaces which doesn't really represent the majority of contanimated surfaces in real life

Hadnt they said this initially with the first variant, and then I thought they backpedaled on that further down the road, saying it actually wasnt able to live on surfaces for any significant amount of time...? This was after claiming basically the exact same thing back nearly 2 years ago.

So the question ends up being: if they went back on what they said initially, and now theyre saying this again...

Why should we believe this now...? How likely will it be that in a couple months they say they were actually wrongagain? This has happened far too frequently with everything in regards to this virus to just take anything anyone says about this pandemic at face value. Even with boatloads of statistics, because theyve done plenty of manipulation in that regard over the past 2 years as well...

Quite the conundrum weve all created for ourselves out of this fucking mess.
