Dealing with the public most people are okay but some just outright come in looking for a fight.

Banned a guy from our store and he started yelling about how it is illegal to ban people due to that being a violation of their human rights....

I work in a grocery store so I do see how abusive people get over food.

Had a woman throw a tantrum because she wanted to return milk she purchased when it was in date but now that it is expired she was yelling about how we sold her expired milk.

Anyway. People abuse retail workers for two main reasons.

1. "The customer is always right" being taken too literally. The original intent meaning 'Don't question a customer's taste'. If they want a hotdog with gravy and mayo, give it to them.
Don't try to talk then out of it.

Instead what people think it means is that customers are God and they get to do whatever the fuck they want. I've had 'customers' who would buy a entire dinner, eat all but one piece of it, demand a refund and they'd fucking get it. Multiple times. Meanwhile any employee v customer dispute would virtually always be given to the customer.

2. People used to abusing other people and not suffering concequences for it. There a reason you seem countless Karens talking mad shit.... but start crying like toddlers and insisting "I'm not that kind of person!" once they realize they're being recorded or that they're about to experience actual concequences.

And not to put too fine a point on it, but people who have taken a punch to the face for talking shit are much less likely to talk shit in the future compared to someone who never caught an ass whipping.

People think retail grunts have more power than they do and take their frustrations with the store out on them.

When I worked at Walmart in high school I had people go off on me because we didn't have in stock or carry what they were looking for. I was like look bitches, I just put shit on the shelf. Yell at who's controlling the supply chain.

Honestly I've only seen customers get that bad a couple times in my 10+ years of working. Mostly at grocery stores. And in my current store, I've never seen it happen. I've heard about a few incidents, just haven't witnessed anything myself yet.
