tl;dr: Fans are decompiling OoT to work on PC. It's should be out in a few months and will have widescreen, 60fps, and be able to incorporate mods; similarly to the Mario 64 PC port from a few years ago. Apparently this reverse engineering is made legal because the fans involved did not use any leaked content, nor use any of Nintendos original copyrighted assets.

Thoughts? >_>

Yeah, they should always wait until it's complete before announcing it. That way it's already out there in the wild lol

the decompilation is already done* but I guess the part that's being worked on now is working out all the other bits that make it a truly functioning port. kinda interesting to see how it all shakes out, I'd mostly thought of the decomp as a way to learn things about the game (and many things have definitely been learned) but I guess you can also make stuff out of it.

* (for a single specific version, but my understanding is that a lot of the knowledge is transferable)

Yeah, but that often doesn't really matter if they threaten you anyway.

I don't get fan projects like these. You know you're gonna get smacked with a cease and desist. What's the point? Why not tweak it here and there and create a totally-original-game instead?

People do it because they love a particular game. It probably started as a desire to play something like this themselves, and so they set out to make something that other people can enjoy. This is the really big factor:

Imagine OOT with mod support. It'd be like Skyrim. People could add their own content and make their own dungeons if they had a workable template.

It would be great if they could finally give us a restoration of Ura Zelda seeing as how the ROM was supposedly leaked to the team working on a now cancelled restoration.

That was the one I was thinking of.

Or the one with the Beta graveyard, gel creatures and stuff.

There's absolutely no way this gets released without a C&D and an army of lawyers knocking on their doors.

I would think that Nintendo's wolfpack of lawyers would be a deterrent though.

It's okay to want to share something with other people, but not when that something is a pirated version of a game. How many Sonic the Hedgehog clones were there in the 90s? Aero the Acrobat, Bubsy, Awesome Possum...

Nintendo hardly has a copyright on "sword-wielding silent warrior." If they made enough changes to the game, they could distribute it legally and make a profit. Nintendo doesn't care about it being a fan's love letter to a game they cherish. They can that every pirated copy of Ocarina of Time is a copy not sold by Nintendo.

There would be no point in Nintendo stopping this port from happening. The game has already been reverse-engineered and made open source, so the process of porting it is relatively simple. If they stop these people from doing it someone else will.

Code is copyrighted or at least should be. I wonder if that only applies to the source code or also to the decompiled code. In any case this seems like something Nintendo lawyers will still pursue even thought it is hard to prove that someone copied your code.
