The US would turn the entirety of Russia into a parking lot in less than an hour

US would probably wreck Russia with overwhelming air power.

inb4 "US couldn't even beat Afghanistan" etc, occupying a country is a far different task than the conventional war this would (more likely) turn out to be.

Look up that one skirmish between US troops and Russians in Syria to get a preview of how it would go down (spoiler: like 300 dead Russian "mercenaries", no US troops killed).

What the fuck is it with the establishment having a hard on for going head to head with Russia this past decade? Is it the natural gas?

people are criticizing the US threatening a counter to Russian aggression but we really should be putting all the blame on putin and his cronies for instigating in the first place

We need atleast specialized forces to be tactical and snipe Russian troops from far away and if they get to close they can retreat for a while, the big tank and anti-air stuff we can provide the equipment but that's up to Europe allies to man and shoot Russia. Right now America shouldn't risk that many American lives until it's a full blown Russia vs. USA war, at that point I'll enlist and I'll make it my mission to stop Putin 1v1.

Whatever happens, Putin has misplayed this situation dramatically. If he goes ahead with some sort of military action, either he loses a shooting war, or the Russian economy gets crashed by sanctions and he gets to fight a bloody guerilla campaign. If he backs down, he looks incredibly weak to his own people, which is the entire reason for all the posturing in the first place.

This, though its more likely they'll nuke each other and destroy the whole planet.

It probably would take longer than an hour given how big most of Russia is (and how much of a hellhole most of the country is), but there's no way Russia wins in a face-off.

And force of habit. Most our leaders were adults during much of the Cold War and are conditioned to see Russia as our foremost enemy.
Plus were offended when other countries have interests that arent identical to ours. Russia has been pissed off about the expansion of NATO since the 90s.
