Pretty much all of Russia's gas pipelines into the rest of Europe go through Ukraine.
Also, anyone who uses the name "the Ukraine" has already abandoned Ukraine to Russia.

I saw a reddit post talking about it. I don't know how true it is, but it made sense to me. From memory:

• There's the whole "reform the Soviet Union" thing other people mentioned ITT
• Also mentioned ITT, winning a war and annexing land makes you popular; Putin could use that
• Ukraine was once called the breadbasket of the Soviet Union. Gaining that farmland would help Russia's agriculture
• Russia annexed Crimea years ago, making it one of Russia's few warm-water ports. Ukraine would provide easier access to it
• Ukraine would provide more of a buffer between Munich and the western powers

They dont. They already took the part that had actual value to them. What they want is for Ukraine to be a buffer state. Though invading it would be preferable to letting it join Russias rivals.

Russia feels insecure because Ukraine is drifting towards the West. It's too late for Russia to do anything though, as it's pretty much a big third world country with a crap economy that is only relevant because of the nukes it still has. Maybe if they didn't want to be in this situation, the oligarchs shouldn't have undermined and destroyed the USSR.

Thats literally what they want though. Russia sees NATO as their enemy, and would really like to keep their important cities, bases and whatnot out of range of as much NATO stuff as possible.

Estonia, Latvia, and Norway have been NATO members for several years (and in Norway's case, decades) and they share a border with Russia.

Worth mentioning that Russia absolutely wants to re-annex the Baltics, which is part of the ultimate goal of this imperial mission.

Honestly no one will really know.

Some will say it's the NATO-allied border thing. Historically, US rivals have always wanted a "buffer" state between a nation with US bases and themselves (e.g. north korea and china "relationship"). It's kind of an old geopolitical strategy in my opinion in the era of mostly air and naval superiority with global first strike capabilities of super powers. But I digress.

Others say it's a resource thing for access to the black sea.

Who knows?

No, legitimately the open world was just "desert with buildings and jungle with buildings." Very few unique or significant landmarks, almost no incentive to explore on your own without a mission, barely anything to do except extract random soldiers...

It wasn't a great open world. And the story was compete trash other than Quiet, who was... passable, but not exactly top tier writing.
