Is democracy in trouble in the US?

The GOP is embracing a Trump dictatorship. They seem to really hate democracy.

The judicial branch was holding the fucking line at the end of Trump's presidency. That's a scary thought.

I don't think "dictatorship" is the right way to frame it. Functionally one-party state with sham elections seems more accurate.

I mean, that's how a lot of them do it these days. Except our system is easier to spoof than most.

I guess it depends on your definition of "close".

If the GOP is allowed to keep pushing the line of what's acceptable, and their opposition continues refuse to hold them responsible, I think a dictatorship, or something resembling one, is possible in one or two generations.

Closer than it's ever been, save for maybe at its founding. They've already made some very strong moves at the state level to ignore or override lost elections in the coming years. They've already enacted laws that make it much harder for people to vote that don't typically vote Republican. If they continue on down this path, invalidate a couple high profile state senate races or whatever, I can definitely see them going full-on autocracy and just installing Trump as king or whatever.

Why wouldn't they, and when have they ever shown there is a line they aren't willing to cross for this man?
