The backstory is once again Princess Zelda is kidnapped by Ganon (or Ganondorf. Whatever the fuck he is called now)

But Link fails in his quest and is slain. Zelda eventually realizes nobody is coming go save her. So she saves herself and breaks out of the dungeon then goes on a quest to obtain training to challenge Ganon herself

Ooh, so would we get to play as Link attempting the rescue, and then switch perspectives once he falls?

This is kind of the 10-year span of wtf happens while you're stuck in the temple of time in OOT

Does Link really have to be dead for Zelda to get off her ass?

I mean, isn't there a timeline where this happens (Link fails/dies) but we just never got to play a game set during that particular event? The Imprisoning War I think it was called.

I was really looking forward to seeing Zelda stand up to the calamity by herself, ideally involving a suicide raid on the captured Hyrule Castle, play out in Age of Calamity.

Of course we got a saccharine shitty time travel plot instead.

Meanwhile, in the underworld, Link learns to play drum solos with Bongo Bongo.

I don't think they'd ever consider that because they're always going to want to keep the Hero, Captive, Villain dynamic that exists in every game with all three characters. So switching the roles of Zelda and Link would make a lot more sense I think, but they'll probably never do that either. Or if they went with your idea they'd just have to revive Link at some point.

They could also just make Zelda the hero of a game that doesn't have Ganon in it.

The Imprisoning War happens in the middle timeline, where Link fails. It doesn't say specifically how he fails, but a popular idea is that Link is removed from the Timeline after returning to the past to access the Spirit Temple.

The Imprisoning War then happens where the 7 Sages and remaining Hyrule Forces fight Ganon and then seal him in the Sacred Realm. This event happens before Link to the Past

Yes but so was Zelda. In OOT Zelda escapes and does shit while Link is AWOL.
