and now they are holding all the cards and poised to take over 2 of the 3 branches within a year, and on a not so bad road to winning the presidency in 2024, even with Trump

The Republican party very much runs on how much they can "own the libs", which is why they're so dysfunctional when they're actually winning; no one to fight when they're already in control.

Can only hope most of their geriatric base burns out in the next few years and that religion goes with it.

2 of the 3 branches? are you counting house and senate as branches? that's one branch. they control the SCOTUS, but not the lower courts, where biden has been quite successful in appointing judges. far more so than trump was, although he has much ground to make up.

also current redistricting does not look to favor GOP, and their clamp down on voting rights is mostly in states that send 2 GOP senators and all but 1 GOP rep as is.

but the reason they've got so much power is that they have already totally consolidated power on state levels to the point that those states are single-party in effect

their path to the presidency is harder; trump achieved an upset that was statistically unlikely but not impossible, and all presidential elections in the future will be the same

They were never imploding. They have been gerrymandering states and filling courts with conservatives for 30 years. Any perceived drama on that national stage is all theater.

The GOP was never on the brink of implosion. They have been steadily winning elections at the local and state level, which is part of the reason they are poised to take so much power.

For some reason the Democratic Party cant or wont play the long game.

Remember the old adage: All politics is local. When it comes right down to it, most voters vote based on whats going on in their own small slice of the world. The GOP has successfully controlled the messaging at the kitchen table to the detriment of the country as a whole.

This is how a lot of election cycles work. It's how the democrats looked after 2016. Every time you see an article like "this could be the end of (X political party)" it's just propaganda or wishful thinking.

Whats even crazier is that the republicans will never win the popular vote again and they still have a good chance at winning the presidency every election.

i'm referring to having SCOTUS already, and then winning both houses in the legislative branch potentially in the 2022 midterms (as the second of 3 branches). and then potentially winning the 3rd in 2024 elections, which I feel is sadly not out of reach

They were never on the brink of implosion.

They've been consolidating immense power at the state level for decades, they have almost unheard of control over redistricting measures which allows them to utilize gerrymandering to maintain minority control over several branches of government, and theyve held the lower judiciary since Bush, and now have firm control over the Supreme Court as well.

They were very nearly able to turn a fairly steep election loss into a victory for themselves.

How anyone could mistake that for a party ready to collapse is beyond me.

i think your assumption that dems are dead meat in the midterms is misplaced, SCOTUS isn't the entire judicial branch, and taking the presidency is really not something we should be assuming for the GOP with any immediacy

i said they are "poised to", meaning that they are in a good position. harris is doing terribly right now, biden is not looking particularly strong, the economy (i.e., stock market) is not doing well, the dems look AWFUL in the house/senate with their complete discord and incompetence in getting anything meaningful done, and so I think they are looking pretty terribly in terms of winning midterms. there's still plenty of time left, but the GOP has (in my opinion) the upper hand at this point, and this did not look at all the case a year ago when trump looked absolutely terrible and half the GOP was going to go down with him as he supported/enabled a coup and did not seem to be against people assassinating his own VP. they went from dead in the water to having the upper hand at this point, which is astounding considering how much power the dems have yielded for a year, and have done pretty much nothing of value with.

The problem with the GOP is that the Old Guard made a Faustian Bargain decades ago with the nutty, conspiratorial fringe evangelical Right, deliberately pandered to them with Fox News for years, but now they don't know how to deal with the fact that those very same people have run for office and won.
