please nintendo

Because it's Nintendo, it's hard to imagine they'll have BC as good as Series/PS5 with the performance upgrades. But a manboy Nintendo fan can dream.

I'm just imagining a Switch 2 that could iron out some of these Switch games... and I know it will not come to pass.

GB -> GBC -> GBA -> OG DS -> 3DS
Gamecube -> Wii -> Wii-U

Given that, I'd say it's very likely

I think the answer is no, but I only voted unlikely, considering they have a fairly decent track record in recent times with backwards comparability:

GBA played GB games
DS played GBA games
3DS played DS games
Wii played GameCube games
Wii U played Wii games

it was really just most recently that the Switch didnt play 3DS or Wii U games.

It better be
This.

I really don't want Nintendo to "reinvent the wheel" after striking gold with the Switch.

The change is understandable since they dropped the dual screen format. Now that we have actual eshop account ownership of games, it would be very nice to actually be able to play them on a new system from the getgo.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's not compatible with Switch carts/existing purchases, but that you can re-buy digital versions of Switch games.

This is like the people who were saying the Switch was gonna bomb. It just isn't realistic. The next console is obviously going to be like the Switch but with better hardware, the idea is too solid to not keep rolling with. Of course it will be backwards compatible with the most successful console currently.

That specifically was referring to performance improvements for games like Hyrule Warriors AoC and Xenoblade Chronicles. But hopefully I'm wrong on that one.

It all depends on if they use the same cartridges for the next console. Hard to know what Nintendo will do.

Not necessarily. GBA was different from GB, DS was very different from GBA, and Wii was different from GBA, but those all were configured to work.

As mentioned previously, the format from dual screens would be very hard to implement on the Switch, so that was out of the question. And they were never gonna implement a CD-based disc drive on the Switch, so Wii U was out of the question.

I still say it is unlikely, but I wouldnt say its hopeless either.

If they dont just do a Switch 2, theyd be massive idiots. Theres time for innovation and there is time to realize that your formula is working. I could see them just sticking with this hybrid stuff as their primary niche at this point seeing as the other two will probably end up being specialized pre-built PCs in the next generation or two. Just need to make sure they properly advertise that it is in fact a new console so they avoid another Wii U situation.

The smart thing would be for their next system to be a Switch 2, which is more memory, better graphics, better everything version of the Switch, with your old library transferable without issue.

Knowing Nintendo, they'll want to innovate in some dumb way that sets them back and is incompatible with the previous generation somehow.

Literally all they need is an attachment with a screen on it that ends up "sitting" on top of the Switch that acts as the top screen for DS/3DS games, because then the main screen on the Switch ends up acting as the touchscreen part.

Shit they could even come up with some kind of "streaming" thing so you could play it on your TV as well.
