Halfway through Memories of Ice. So many truly epic scenes and unique concepts but hold shit that writing is needlessly dense x.x

I tried and failed to get into it a few years back. I got through the first book slowly then just completely checked out on the second one.

It's just not for me. I don't need everything explained in intricate detail but it's like the complete opposite where everything is annoyingly vague and unexplained

I read the first one.

I don't think I could tell you a single thing about it.

Finally finished it on my second readthrough attempt like half a year ago. A lot to like, but some things were kinda annoying. Erikson's seemingly endless attempts to ratchet up tension by hinting at things he wasn't going to reveal until later bugged me on first readthrough. I'm not very observant so I would just forget about it and only retain the irritation of not knowing what the characters are speaking about so unnecessarily cryptically yet again.

Was more palatable on second read when I could understand what was being hinted at and foreshadowed. Came out with a better appreciation of his writing style.

Going through it this time I've come to feel that it's neither the forshadowing nor the vagueness that's individually a problem, but the combination of the two. It seriously gets to the point where I can't tell if I'm supposed to know what they're talking about, or if I'm supposed to be learning of something and unable because of the writing.

But I can't deny how much I love about the stories. The Grey Swords in Capustan alone are better than most fantasy I've read recently :x

Halfway through Memories of Ice is as far as I made it. Maybe I'll have to try again someday.
