It's just addictive. The chest is a very strong and active muscle. Your baseline is lower than most other muscles, which means you can add more weight on quicker because they are smaller incremental percentages per pound. I just love the feeling of being able to add five or ten more pounds and feel the progression.

It's one of those exercises that's good if you know what you're doing, but almost no one knows what they're doing so they end up just destroying their shoulders.

wait, people are out here getting their shoulders involved? Benching is mainly pectoral with some resdiual bicep and tricep workings. I can't even recall a time I have ever felt my shoulders tighten or anything during a bench.

Yes, I think you can injure your rotator cuff with the bench press. I think it is similar to how you can injure your shoulders when doing other exercises like the lat pulldown or the overhead dumbbell press. It does seem odd, but I guess it has to do with not being warmed up, poor technique, too heavy a weight, etc.

Shoulder pain and shoulder injuries are very common with bench press. You also can't do a bench press without engaging your shoulders, it's just they're not the primary mover. They're still important though and delts are actually a bottleneck for a lot of people on bench.
